Something Smells Soulful

I took some traditional Soul style music and applied a modern guitar sound:

Very cool! Nice tones! You are a prolific writer - lots of cool songs on your page. I'm curious, are you recording with a real amp or a hardware modeler or software modeler?

Re: Something Smells Soulful

Thanks. My guitar goes into an Axe FX II (along with the FreqOut pedal for any feedback sounds you hear). From there direct to computer. The same with vocals or keyboards or anything else I may record... direct to computer. I only added vocals and guitar to this song... the rest is a progression I punched into Band-in-a-Box. I use Sonar X3 (by Cakewalk) to record... add a global reverb, etc.

Cool - thanks for sharing! The setup sounds great! I've never heard of band in a box. I do recall you made a video about the FreqOut pedal - I need to go back and watch that video you made.

Re: Something Smells Soulful

I've been using Band-in-a-Box for years... http://www.pgmusic.com/

Select the style of music you want (for example there are 100 jazz examples in different timings, and you can change timings from 4/4 to 3/4, for example). Punch in your chords, set the temp, etc., etc., etc. You can mute instruments, change their EQ, etc. It's super expansive and ideal for song composition and practice.

Very interesting - thanks for sharing! I will watch those BIB vids too.

I see I can purchase songs individually on your page - but I'm curious if you have an album that can be purchased? I like supporting independent music - I've bought albums from a number of Jemsite members (e.g. Dimi Nalbantov, Sean Bodley, Craig Shutt)

Re: Something Smells Soulful

No album... just bang out 1-2 songs a week as a means of 'practice' and to have fun. I originally set up that page to sell songs (with money donated to a charity), but I guess my stuff sucks... no one bought any, lol. That was a year or so ago... since then, I just put them up for downloading or streaming.

Wow, 1 or 2 songs per week is impressive - that is prolific output for original material! That is very cool that you set it up to sell songs to donate money to charity. I like supporting independent original music and I will buy some of your songs And your stuff definitely doesn't suck!

Re: Something Smells Soulful

I find it easy when you have Band-in-a-Box... when you 'select' a style of music, you can play the audition button. Often just hearing something different can spark creativity more easily than strumming away at a guitar waiting for a tune to happen. I don't practice is the traditional sense... scales, licks, chords, etc. I know enough theory and know those basics to apply them when necessary. I practice by developing a song, which I find far less boring than the former.
