Why, was his acting that good you couldn't tell?!

HELL NO! If I remember right Steve played some of it and Ry Cooder played the rest.

No, that was actually Steve Vai playing Ralph Machio's part for "Eugene's Trick Bag." The rest of Ralph's 'playing' was really done by Ry Cooder (and some other guy for the classical stuff).

Wasn't it Britney Spe...oh, wait... different Crossroads. She doesn't fake it very well, either.

You can tell he isnt playing the beginning , but after the fast paginni part when the triads move up and down the neck , he 'fingers' plays that bit properly , they must of told him where to put his fingers or something :P

Actually.... as a Ralph Machio interview went back in the day.... his guitar coach was no other than Arlen Roth (producer of many hot licks instructional videos).

Machio was coached on the end part by Ry Cooder...... and then Steve Vai for the Caprices ending.

Arlen Roth has said that Machio was quick study, and learned as much in two weeks, as some people learn in 5 years.

Of course being surrounded by Vai, Cooder, Arlen Roth, and the classical guitarist doesn't hurt.

In the scene in the Juliard, before Ralph (Eugene) plays before his professor...there is an Asian girl playing classical guitar..... I believe she was the one playing the acoustic classical phrases in the opening scene.

From The Elusive Light And Sound Vol 1:

"A lot of people ask me if that's me doing both guitar parts in the duel. I do all the guitars except the slide stuff, that's Ry. Essentially I had to beat myslef in the last movement. Some people think that's actually Ralph Macchio playing the guitar. He's a celluloid here, not a rock star, baby!"

I always wondered about that. I must admit though, he didnt do a bad job of faking it at all.

no he didn't do a bad job.

In fact, its an excellent job for someone who doesn't play guitar!!

I mean, I can watch it without even clenching teeth or anything...there are a FEW things here and there that could've been better, but all in all, a job extremely well done!

I just love the look on Steve's face when Ralph Machio finishes playing Eugenes Trickbag. That look is priceless and makes me laugh everytime.
Its a look if disgust.
