Steel Panther - Feel the Steel

Anybody else pick up the new Steel Panther release? 80's metal bashers don't even bother with this thread, because it won't interest you in the slightest and I don't want to hear the whining. But if you LIKE that kind of stuff, SP is a freakin' RIOT. Funny thing is, the songs are actually pretty decent, but the lyrics are xxx rated. The music could be any 80's band, but an "Explicit Lyrics" label doesn't even get you into the ballpark. I had the old Metal Skool CD (their name before becoming Steel Panther), and it was ok - some funny stuff and some decent playing, but the new disc is MUCH better. The ballads are hysterical. My fave is "Community Property."

I read an interview with Satchel (Russ Parrish) on PermierGuitar.com and he says he just goes through a JCM2000. No effects. I'd like to know what they really did in the studio, because his tone is monstrous. His playing on the new disc is equally huge.

Your mileage may vary, but I had this CD cranked in my car today and loved the music and laughed my ass off at the lyrics. I meant to go see these guys in Vegas when I was out there last, but didn't make the show. It's definitely on my list for next trip. Too funny.

I have it and it kicks ass!!!!!!

I used to listen to them when they were Atomic Punk, then Metal Skool, The Ducks, Thornbirds........
Russ is an incredible guitar player. He played for Rob Halfords band Halford.

I love 80's metal like Racer X, Danger Danger and so on, but with Steel Panther, the band itself just creeps me out.

Re: Steel Panther - Feel the Steel

You gotta take like it's meant. It's supposed to be an over the top representation of hair metal, and they do it well. Very coarse humor, so if you can't handle that, you won't like the band. But tunes like "Stripper Girl," "Community Property," and "Girl From Oklahoma" parody LA metal bands perfectly.

Parrish was also in Fight and in War & Peace with Jeff Pilson. But this is the best tone I've heard from him. Definitely got the chops!

That's just some of the best stuff I've heard in a while.

They are really good at capturing/reproducing other bands' "trademark" riffs

It is hilarious. It uses all the 80's cliches. Now that I am 41 years old PHAT girls doesn't seem so bad!

Re: Steel Panther - Feel the Steel

I finally got to listen to this this week, and it is hilarious! The lyrics are so over the top, but the rips of other bands songs (Poison and Bon Jovi, etc) are just amazing. The production sounds amazing, and Parish's tone and playing is fantastic.

Re: Steel Panther - Feel the Steel

It really is. It's so silly that it's a parody/humor album, but it's so damn good. I got several people at my work listening to it, and it's spreading like wildfire now. Steel Panther will soon rule the world.
