Steve Morse - which album to buy?

a few years back I saw steve morse play with deep purple and was really impressed with his playing so i bought his major impacts 2 album. when i got it, i didn't really like it so i put it aside. so now recently, i was on a john petrucci craze and he always mentions steve and/or the dregs in his interviews. i figured i'd give that major impacts album another listen and......now its my favorite. i'd like to check out some of his other stuff (the guy freaking does it all!)

so i need a recommendation for a dixie dregs album and another for the steve morse band (there's a new dvd out soon, by the way)

Get his first album "The Introduction" and his "High Tension Wires". His "Stressfest" album is also very good.

Steve Morse: The Introduction
Dregs: Freefall (you got to buy a Dregs album with "cruise control" on it)

True! I just have a particular affinity for that album, but you are sooooo right- He's a guitar monster and very melodic and tasteful.

I've only ever heard The Introduction, but I would definitely recommend it, it's a great album.

Stressfest and High Tension Wires.

Major Impacts is great too, but less of a Steve Morse album as Steve making songs "in the spirit of" other artists. Very good songs, but sort of an odd compilation.

Re: Steve Morse - which album to buy?

I'd get 'The Introduction' first, as well. After that, I'd skip the rest of his solo stuff and go back to the Dixie Dregs records, and get 'Unsung Heroes' and 'Industry Standard' and maybe 'What If' or 'Night of The Living Dregs'. I personally think all of the older Dregs/Dixie Dregs stuff is better than his later solo stuff, plus you get the amazing Andy West on bass with the Dregs records. All of the Dixie Dregs records have a country picking shred fest, a rock tune and a classical piece as well. This was a band that really had no equal. Check out the nice classical duet with Steve Howe from Yes on 'Industry Standard' s "Up in the Air".
