Re: Strapping Young Lad - "Alien"
Just picked up Alien...listening to "Skesis" right now (this is a first time listen-through of everything)...it sounds like typical Devy structuring. Repeated riffs with ambient vocals, synths, etc. played over it. I wasn't really impressed by the first song, and Skesis really isn't too great yet either (remember, this is a first-listen impression, still on the second song!) I hope the awesome rhthyms of City are in here somewhere!

But really, how do they get away with releasing these albums without a parental advisory? I'm really curious to know.

Keep listening! As with any SYL release, it takes a while for all the sounds to really sink in. There's a LOT going on there.

You're right. SYL is very good at the "wall of sound" effect. If there was ever a death/black/heavy (whatever SYL is classified as) symphony, SYL would be it. Achieving their heaviness and "wall of sound" is a lot harder than one would think. A
lot
harder.

Of course, if you like the symphonic wall o' sound, you can't go wrong Dimmu Borgir's last 2 CDs (Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Death Cult Armageddon). \m/

My guess: Parental Advisory labels are a US exclusive thing, SYL are a Canadian band (recorded in Canada too).

I actually did a little research on this. Century Media for
Strapping Young Lad
albums is based in the U.S. I went on the RIAA's website and I came across this:

The decision to label a particular sound recording is made by each record company in conjunction with the artist. The industry as a whole and its individual companies take this program seriously.
So it seems the RIAA doesn't really enforce it. So it's not really the RIAA that censors, but rather the companies themselves (if I'm interpretting this correctly.) I'm not sure about this, but I don't really remember seeing the parental advisory on any other Century Media release either, but I could be wrong.

Re: Strapping Young Lad - "Alien"
^^^^ To me, that's good news. Thanks for the info, Jeff. I've wondered how CDs get the Parental Advisory sticker.
In this day and age, I'm surprised a
few
curse words still gets people in an uproar. "
Oh my gosh, he said the "F" word!
Oooo, shocking.
However, if your song is called "A fun-filled evening with a box of puppies and a woodchipper", then yeah, the "interesting" subject matter would problably warrant....well, you do the math.

Best title ever
But I see what you're saying, there was a huge uproar from some parents who were complaining about Amy Lee of Evanescence saying "F*ck" in their cover of Korn's "Thoughtless" on their recent live album. Got it banned from Walmart, wanted a warning label put on it, and all the usual stuff.
But in that case, it's because some people (Christians) still hold strong to their belief that Evanescence is a Christian band, even though they've said repeatedly that while a couple members are Christians, the band itself is not.
