Strapping Young Lad - "Alien"

I never thought SYL would top "City." When I heard SYL III I thought I was right.

Then along came "Alien."

Holy crap this is a great album. Anyone who's into extreme metal should check this out and prepare to have their ass blown off. Devin Townsend is a freaking genius.

SYL are awesome. Actually as I type this I have 'Oh My F**king God' playing on my jukebox. Uber heavy hehe, even if it is all tongue in cheek.

SYL was my favorite release. I prefer the Devin Townsend Band over Strapping Young Lad, but Strapping Young Lad is good when you're in the mood for it.

Have you heard the new one yet, Jeff? The samples and backing vocals and melodies are back...

Payday can't comes fast enough. I'm picking this one up tomorrow. "City" is an amazing CD & anything with Gene Hoglan is (to me) the drummer's bible.

Re: Strapping Young Lad - "Alien"

Gene is the master on this album. The last one was written by them all as a band, and Jed played all the rhythm guitars. The new album was written by Dev and Gene while Bryon and Jed were on tour with Fear Factory (Jed teched for Byron), and it has much more of that signature Devin Townsend sound.

Sounds good. Before Jed & Byron got big being in the SYL & FF camp, they played in the Vancouver-based band, Zimmer's Hole. Being in Seattle, I've seen them a few times....KILLER! I've even become decent friends with Gene as well. Great guy & a drumming master!

Cool! I've hung out with Dev and Gene a couple times. They tour Australia quite reguarly. I had the pleasure of interviewing Devin once as well.

There is a cool making-of documentary here: http://www.centurymedia.de/syl/

I'm probably going to be picking this one up too...

Re: Strapping Young Lad - "Alien"

Wow, I just listened to City for the first time, and this album ROCKS! It's really heavy, but it's stuff I can listen to when I'm not pissed off. I have to be pretty pissed off to listen to SYL. I'm definitely going to be picking up a copy of Alien and City ASAP!

Re: Strapping Young Lad - "Alien"

How do these guys get away with releasing these albums without having a Parental Advisory on them?? (at least for U.S. releases...I'm not quite sure how the system works.)
