Thumbs up

Suspended Animation - JP kicks da pooper

I'm listening to Suspended Animation right now. IMO, anyone who even remotely likes Petrucci's playing should buy it. Some really tasty stuff going on on this album. Really groovy riffs, too. From Santana to freakin' Rusty Cooley in terms of technique, musically 100% JP, which means pretty good.

It's one of those albums which make me think about selling my guitars and amps and taking up some other hobby. I'll never be THIS good.

Yeah I also thought it was a great album. Many of his stock licks here and there but hey that happens to everyone (Satch, Vai).

JP keeps surprising me. I'll never know how can he write such cool guitar music and be such a lame improviser at the same time...

I thought it was a pretty good album, but why did he make his guitar tracks so dry?! A little reverb or delay here and there never hurt anyone (I'm looking at you, Glasgow Kiss.)

also, one of the songs has satriani feel too it.
but i must say...Petrucci has not lost his melodic sense in any way !! i luv those legatos on curve (i think).
I hope he churns out more solo albums...or rather get LTE back ! \m/

Re: Suspended Animation - JP kicks da pooper

Jeff, I think delay and reverb would make his tone less focused. And JP apparently likes focused, thick tone, which he achieves by recording his riffs multiple times through different amps and then mixing it all together. Heck I've tried this a couple of times myself, with the same amp, but different settings in first and second take. I recorded the same riff, and put the first take almost completely in the left channel and the second take almost completely in the right. There was so much meat, I couldn't believe it was the same amp. Unfortunately, for something non-trivial (such as JPs riffs) you'd need to play those riffs perfectly to make this sound good. For a pro this is a non-issue. For a guy who practices only on the weekends (such as myself) this is problematic.

I think it's a really great effort. I know jp has had tonnes of material waiting to be released for ages, and trust me it's about time. I'm not much of a fan of mesa tones though :P

Great album IMHO.

I just got this album today.

I'm amazed. It's the guitar instrumental album I've been waiting for. Didn't have to skip a single track on first listening

Im tired of his tone, i think he sounds completely different than the albums live too *(often better)* I tend to frown upon studio work to acheive a players real tone Its just unfortunate.

His tone varies a bit, but the music on Suspended Animation is so good I didn't really even notice

I think Liquid Tension Experiment is still some of the best stuff John's ever done.

I have this album and listen to it all the time, i have put it up there with surfing with the alien and passion and warfare, i love JP`s album, the licks are so well played that this should be the new benchmark for technical players.

Youve hit the nail on the head there!

I used to be a lot better at improvising when he was younger, i think he's lost it now though, seems to do the same blues licks all the time now.
