Jump/VH

Always loved that analogy of Eddie falling down the stairs and landing on his feet...

Absolute favourite has to be Steve Lukather on Toto's "Jake To The Bone"

It's just beautiful

Hmm.. Most of my fav solos are obscure.. lol

James Murphy - Touching the Earth

Off his first solo CD, though I don't think he's ever done a bad solo. Alex Skolnick might've been a child prodigy, but the Testament albums after he left are the best ones, IMO. 'Low' is their best record for me.

Randy Rhoads, and Criss Oliva(especially Gutter Ballet), both have amazing solos too.

I think the climax of Yngwie's "Far Beyond the Sun" is the ultimate solo. It changes every show due to his constant improv but is class each time.

I didn't even think of DT last time I saw this thread...

Innocence Faded off of "Awake" is pretty sweet.

I don't base what I think is good solely on technical ability, speed, etc... Sometimes if I hear something, I just sit back and think, "Damn that's really good" and I can't stop listening to it.... I like the way Petrucci makes his guitar howl and how he can hold a deep, just under-ear piercing note that just sinks into you. Know what I mean?

There are so many awesome solos out there, from Bob Mould's in "If I Can't Change Your Mind", to Reeves Gabrels in "Looking for Satellites", to Junior Brown's "Guit-Steel Blues".
The solo I'm currently amazed with and hooked on right now is Paul Gilbert's in his most recent tune, "I'm Not Afraid of the Police"... simply amazing and shreddy while still being musical and fitting within the song.

One recent one I really like:

Our Lady Peace - One Man Army

Very cool solo, very very unusual/different.

The most emotional song for me:
Satch - The forgotten, part II (Flying In A Blue dream): Try to listen it it the dark, close your eyes, and let your soul fly away...

The best metal solo:
Metallica - Creeping death

The best "boogie" song:
Satch Boogie

Not the best solo in the world, but one solo that blew me away recently comes from a live version of "Psycho Sam" by Jeff Beck...At least i think that's the song...i think it's on the "Who Else" album...Incredible phrasing, sounds like a trumpeter/sax player taking a solo...
