I love the stuff Alex Skolnick did with Testament-'Goodbye to Serenity' is awesome. Love 'Electric Crown' and 'Souls of Black' as well.

Best solo though? I don't count 'entire' Vai/satch tunes (such as FTLOG) as solos.

Under a Glass Moon
Big Trouble
Skyscraper

probable fave is

'yo Mama' off sheik Yerbouti (Zappa)

Guess you only get one chance in life
To play a song that goes like...

Zappa - Joes Garage
The solo contains two notes. Awesome

My vote goes to Paul Gilbert - Technical Difficulties.
It was a bloody hard choice though, its such a hard question!

I don't know why, but I've always thought that 2:13-2:16 of Always with me Always with you by Satch is the most amazing sounding guitar ever. (Studio version, not Live version) Sure its not difficult to play, but the bending of the C# to the D# is the cleanest, nicest guitar I have ever heard in my life. Has a guitar ever screamed so much before?

I Think the greatest guitar solo is the crossroads suite, it has everything!!!!!!! And the way that Vai mix the classical with rock is simply awesome.

You know who i gotta give it up for? One of the best solos I've ever heard in a "mainstream" rock band is Billy Corgan;s lead break on "Rhinoceros," off the Smashing Pumpkins' first disc, "Gish."

Aside from being an amazing song, it's got a few things going for it- decent technical proficiency while holding onto a very "off the cuff" spontaniety, it represents a big compositional change in the tune, and it has a VERYr ecognizeable sound- you can tell it's Corgan within like the first three notes of any solo he's ever cut.

Brilliant stuff.

Other contenders would be 'Victory' from youthanasia(Megadeth), and 'Ease' from Album(Pil).

Tricky!

I have to agree with the guy above.. on "Always with me always with you".. not the most complex of songs but.. my god does Satch make EVERY little subtlty work so amazingly well in that song.. oh yes (studio version as said above)

a hard one indeed!

Hey fellas (and ladies),

I'm chiming in late, but here are my two cents:

For all out intensity: Yngwie's solo on his version of "The Sails of Charon" on the Inspiration album. I'm like, "damn!!"

For just the solo to make you fall over and die: Yngwie's solo on "Like an Angel" on the Facing the Animal album.

For the solo that lasts almost the entire song and just makes you want to listen again and again and again: A tie between Steve Vai's "Boston Rain Melody" on The Seventh Song and Rikk Beatty's "N.O.S." on Pointing at the Moon.

Hey, what can I say? I'm full of shameless plugs....

wow, another pumpkins fan on jemsite, i thought i was the only one!

Yeah, Billy Corgan's solos are great, his best (in my opinion) coming on I Am One, Geek USA, Soma, all the guitar work on Porcelina.... and also For Martha.

Back on topic, there is no way i could pick an all time favourite solo, so i'll list a few.

Under a Glass Moon, Another Day, Erotomania, Lines in the Sand, The Spirit Carries On, and Goodnight Kiss from JP of Dream Theater

Manhatten and Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson
Bold as Love by Hendrix
ANYTHING by Joe Satriani
Sultans of Swing and Brothers in Arms by Mark Knopfler
Bliss by Paul Gilbert
Not all, but most Vai solos
The aforementioned Pumpkins solos,
Also, anything by Eddie Van Halen, but noteably Jump and Beat It
