The best sound I ever heard

Can you nail down the best tone you ever heard to the specific song, I can: John Petrucci on A Change of Seasons playing Achillies Last Stand during the solo. It's the best to me.

What was he using at this time? Pickups, guitar amps? Anyone know? What kind of pickup could I use to achieve this type of sound?

Please, share your ultimate tone down to the song and section if you want.

Re: The best sound I ever heard

I really love the tones on Joe's Crystal planet album, but if I had to narrow it down, i'd say that the solo tone on House Full of Bullets is as close to perfection as I have heard imho.

The ironic thing is that when I look for tones when i'm playing, I like using a more old school metal sound myself. If I tried for that sort of tone, it just wouldn't be "me".

Rock on!

I love Vai's tone on the opening riff of Sex and Religion (the song, not the whole album). Thick'n'creamy

Of course....the tone on Bad Horsie ain't too shabby either

^ You're right, she does. I'm pretty sure she doesn't want us to talk about it over the internet though.
