The Great Kat - why haven't I ever heard of this fast female shredder ?
Just stumbled on this chick who apparently is the worlds fastest guitar player. Metal versions of classical standards like the bumble bee song etc...

Yeah for sure, I listened to her stuff its a lot like 100 hands scrapping nails on blackboards. She looks like a pornstar/guitarist.

I havn't heard her play, but I think she was a little respected player. She ranked 5th in the 1990 Guitar World worst player list behind CC Deville and Mick Marrs among others

Hopefully it will be another 15 years before anyone else mentions her again.

Re: The Great Kat - why haven't I ever heard of this fast female shredder ?
I've heard of her and instantly erased her from my brain because she's awful. That bumble bee video is a joke. It's more sloppy than fast and too distorted - so as to cover up the sloppy playing. The goal at Juilliard is to be more, not less, musical when you leave there. They are likely ashamed of her. But it must be painful to have been someone skilled at music at one time and morphed into some kind of bad circus clown.
I'm with Lefty. Lori Linstruth is waaaaaay better on all levels. (and she is waaaaaay better looking too - hey, that's a level too isn't it?)
Katrina Johansson is a much better player as well.

Sadly true. That's what happens when poor practice habits are left unchecked. I can only assume that the novelty of a girl playing "fast" trumped a girl playing actuall "music". I do think it's supper cool that she playes pretty well. Her image is very disturbing though.
My daugher has been motivated to practice more recently. She realy likes
Andy Timmons
, and it just doent get more musical than him.
We just rearanged our living room. pushing the tv and the sofa to the side. Now it's drums, amps and PA. We all had our amps in our bedrooms making jamming together impossible. But now we turn on and start playing, easy peazy boss. Last night we were playing this kinda bluesy thing. My son wanted to play bass so I played drums. My daughter was playing some nice stuff. Nothing shreddy, but when I told her slow down, hang on a sweet note, ad a little vibroto without pulling it out of tune. Nice.
We all know that a few sweet notes kills a noodly scale played poorly. I'm trying to get her to hear the difference and start playing well at slow speeds. But not just well, musically. Some people just have a way of making every note sing. It come natural for some people I think. I'm not sure where my daughter falls in there. She can hear the difference between notes she playes better than others, and that's a big plus. While she still plays goofy notes and pulls them out of tune sometimes, she's aware of it and tries to make corrections. I really hope she'll be one of the girls making real music and not just playing fast in a few years.
BTW, does anyone see her as a good role model for their daughters? Wether she's an actual sleaze or not, she certainly portrays one.

I dont think she set out to be a role model for anyones daughters.
Hell, even Miley Cirus is out there slutting it up for everyone now, I guess people will need to pay more attention to who their kids look up to.

You say that like it's a bad thing!!
Her NPS rating is 13 which puts her tied for 11th place with Greg Howe,
Zakk Wylde
,
Steve Morse
, Joe Stump, Neal Zaza, Tony Smotherman, and Randy Rhoads!!
NPS is notes per second

Oh boy, The Great Kat again!
I see on her website she's now ripping off Emilie Autumn with the whole tattered Victorian goth look.
http://www.myspace.com/emilieautumn
Kat must also be all of 4' tall. That S looks HUGE on her!
Yeah, and her playing is sloppy too. Speed means nothing without feeling IMO.
Cheers!
