they aren't the best for just listening to, but if you are going to sleep put on some head phones and listen to them cause then everything is jumping back and forth and its crazy. Its alot more intresting with headphones on!!

Re: the mars volta
Ive been meaning to give it a serious listen since i found out John Alderete from Racer X plays bass...
But i still cant bring myself to do it... at first listen it sounds complicated for the sake of it, and that stops me from going at it again....

...I hope you don't admit you listen to Vai or Dream Theater...
De-loused In The Comatorium sure is a great album with a horrible name.
Definitely worth checking out.

Re: the mars volta
I've seen them live twice this year in MN. I have to say that I like them better on CD than live. They are great live, but they go into 20 minutes jams that don't work well in arenas. If they were to do this in a small club it would rock, but in the larger venues it just turns into noise.

I have to agree with that. I saw them open for RHCP a while back and all I heard was horrible noise, so I decided that they must be a bad band and didn't bother. Around that time the MV hype started and just about everyone kept repeating how great they are, so I listened to the CD. I liked that much more than what I heard live, but I found their music still too unfocused. I feel that they tried to fit too many different influences into the music and something was lost as a result.

They're great, it's just a matter of taste. It's not "wierd" !

Re: the mars volta
I've seen them a few times...first opening for A Perfect Circle last year. I'd never heard of them and my initial thought was "what the f#$* is all this noise?".
But, I gave them a second chance and picked up "De-loused..." and "Francis the Mute". GREAT CDs. They definitely grow on you though. The material is pretty dense and takes some getting used to.
I saw them at the Fillmore a few months back and it was "An Evening With..." show. GREAT dynamics, great sound, great music overall.
Saw them last Sunday with System of a Down and they were a little more jammy than they really needed to be, but I still dug them. The drummer is a maniac! GREAT player! The majority of the SOAD audience absolutely hated them though. Definitely not the best pairing, but...interesting for sure.

Re: the mars volta
i cant get enough of them!
did you know that omar rodriges (the guitarist) has over 200 effects pedals?
he says that when he wants to create a sound, he chooses "five or six pedals, try them out and chop and change however i want"- it would be nice to have the money to be able to do that!

Re: the mars volta
One of my favorite bands out there just cause of their creativity and the way they write their music and one of the most energetic to be seen live. Plus.. how can you not dig guys dancing half way doing a song and still sound good? Oh my opinion is that their previous band At the drive-in was better.. but thats just me..

i would have to say that its not too many influences, but mabye more like too many drugs. just a thought though. there is a crazy book about de loused and if you read it you will just be like....WTF! yeah i've been listening to them for awhile cause my guitar teacher a while back went to NY and saw them open for Beck and the beastie boys. i guess thats how i learned of them, but i've yet to see them live.
