the trouble with Music Match

sigh.

I'm trying to move into the digital revolution. Really. I record my songs onto a ZIP disk. I even get my porn from the internet. Now I'm trying to convert all my CDs to MP3s so I can have hours of bliss at my fingertips without doing the "CD shuffle". I just have one problem.

Alphabetizing.

Normally, I don't care what order the songs are played in. Normally. But there are a few albums where it really matters. I listened to PAW so many times that I CANNOT hear the songs in alphabetical order. Same with Operation Mindcrime or just about any Dream Theater album you care to mention.

I've looked for an option in MusicMatch where I can tweak this, buy have yet to find one. Of course, I don't have the "plus" version, and maybe that's what I need.

I know they're "files" instead of tracks. I even tried to go into the directory where they're located and add a numerical system to the file names to force them in a certain order, to no avail. Anyone have a fix for me?

Doesn't MusicMatch add ID3 tags to your files that includes things like track numbers?

If not, why not try iTunes... it does all of that, so you can play albums sorted by track number.

I'll second iTunes. I was forced to use MusicMatch to sync my iPod before Apple ported iTunes to Windows. iTunes is much easier to use than MusicMatch.

Even if I didn't have an iPod, I'd use iTunes. It's just a nice player / ripper.

There is an option in Music Match that can do this but I can't remember where exactly.
The option is not very intuative but it has a tick box next to it and after you do it all the songs have a digit before the name - so songs end up being played as on the CD.
I'll have a quick look tonight and post again.

Yep, can't remember the menu name, but it's something like "tools" there is a tab for "recording" and under that there is a "preferences" option. Within there you can determine the tag order and options. Have it display the artist, album, track number, track title. Or I usually do it along the lines of having a folder for the artist, and a folder for each album within that, then files are titled by track#,track title.

So a song off PAW would be like D:\mp3\Steve Vai\Passion and Warfare\01 Liberty.mp3

Yeah, when ripping CDs, I usually have my settings like this:

C:\My Music\Artist\Album\Artist - Album - (2 digit track number, e.g. 01, 02, 13) - Song Title.mp3

Adding track numbers to the file name seems silly when ID3 tags will do the same thing.

MusicMatch/Options/Settings/Recorder/Songs Directory - tick the box by *Track Number* and you are in business.

In iTunes yes. In other programs, not always. Winamp for example sorts by filename.

Though now I have the problem with iTunes not sorting by filename. I just finished going through a bunch of tracks adding track numbers so they'd play in order.

Re: the trouble with Music Match

Alright I've got a music match question...

I'm using Music Match 10 Plus on my PC.

I'm ripping a ton of CDs to MP3. Here's what my screen looks like before a CD is inserted:

Once a CD goes in, here's what pops up:

I have it not auto-playing CDs, but it still brings up the large window with the track listing for every CD I put in. My g/f has Music Match 9 on her PC and this doesn't happen... can't find a setting on either computer that seems to solve this issue. It is quite annoying. Help?

Try holding Shift when you put in the CD, it won't Autoplay.
