Tommy F'ing Bolin

On a lark I picked up this new album of unrealesed material by the late Tommy Bolin called "Whips and Roses". I think it just came out last week...holy holy fart...this guy was a monster..I heard some of his other stuff before and it was OK - but this compilation is just so guitar heavy and amazing (who ever remixed this made the guitar sound huge)..the guy was like a cross betweeen Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin and Hendrix..with great vocal and songwriting chops..incredible, incredible recording...

I have always had a love/hate affair wirth the guys playing - brilliant as on the aforementioned Billy Cobham track, and other times just a bit too cliched..but this new recording I just got is a stellar chunk of his guitar playing..and the sound is killer - must of been remixed with the guitar in your face...he has the nuances of a Jeff Beck and the fluidity of a hendrix..it's worth picking it up..

I haven't heard of his solo stuff before but I think i'll check it out. But it's just damn hard to get this kind of rare stuff here

Yeah, Tommy Bolin is pretty underrated. A shame since he was very talented.

I've still got the "Tommy Bolin The Ultimate" 2CD Box Set - it's a really great collection from his solo career + various collaborations; studio + live tracks. I think it's more or less in chronological order too.

It really should've been a 4-disc set, truth be told.
