That is the way I understand the system works.
You're bang on with that one Rich. The notion of getting paid to play a brand is quite misleading, although I have heard of 'incentive packages' being involved in some endorsement agreements where some $$$ exchange hands, but usually that $$$ is supposed to have a specific purpose like paying for road clinics like Rich mentioned. The idea of paying someone to endorse a product is generally looked down on with most companies.

I hope T-Mac gets a sig too. His playing is just sweet, even if his tone is usually too thin.

8 string, huh? Can't wait to hear that beast in his hands.

Re: Tony MacAlpine switches to Ibanez!

Why would it be looked down on, to be paid to use a certain brand. If you help a company sell 1000 more guitars then usual, why should you do that free of charge, its not like anyone really loves a brand and wants to help them get rich...

I dissagree, big companies should pay people to use their equipment, in order to boost sales, and public image....

Obviously Big Guitar brands like Ibanez know, that any up comming guitarist, is over the moon, to even be mentioned on their endorsee list, and they dont have to pay them anything, just maybe a free guitar or cheaper equipment.. Ibanez gets away with hardly outlaying any money and they have almost free advertisement of their products....

If guitarists as a whole, decided to demand more for big brands to use their name for next to nothing, they would be getting more Buck for their BANG !!!

Just my opinion !!

Ibanez and most companies don't pay endorsees just like Rich says.
Have you ever played a Carvin? Outside of LACS and J-customs, almost every Carvin is a higher quality instrument than production Ibanez guitars (of a same cost) It must have something to do with specs, such as Tony enjoying Edge lopro's or ZR trems that are specifically Ibanez, maybe they are considering doing a specific TMac custom, or at least a LACS model for him.

As great as Carvin is, their options are quite limited, so im sure it has something to do with Tony wanting something they couldnt do, or just wanting to get more publicity as an "Ibanez endorsee" as most of the shredders seem to gear towards, while Carvin is more of a overall/vintage fanbase.

I personally sold all my ibanez's to buy Carvins, and my main 6 string right now is a Carvin neck on an Ibanez S body (Carvin necks are #1)

Companies don't generally pay artists because it doesn't make as much business sense to do so. Why offer cash when you can offer something much more valuable to the artist and the company like marketing? Cash only really benefits the artist other than the business deduction the company gains from it. It is MUCH more valuable to an artist to be part of an ad campaign in major guitar publications and that also has a direct benefit to the endorsing company. The artist gets major exposure which he may not be able to personally afford (and they always seem to mention a cd or tour) and the company gets to link themselves and their products to a famous artist on pages in front of thousands of musicians. It's a win - win for both sides and makes for a better business deal than just paying somebody cash. What a company can offer in this respect definitely plays heavily into choosing a company to work with. And obviously, Hoshino is a giant company with huge ad dollars.

Artists also negotiate appearance and clinic fees but that is for work that is done on behalf of the company, just like any other employee. As Rich said, signature gear pays royalties based on what is sold and is usually a nominal fee. But if it's a very famous dude, then the royalties can add up fast, of course. The bulk of endorsement deals just involve free or heavily discounted gear and that's it. Of course, the company gets exposure every time that artist plays and the artist allows the use of his name which in turn lends credibility to the company. Above and beyond anything else, endorsement deals are just business deals and it has to benefit both sides. Traditionally, music companies have not operated like Nike or Gatorade and laid out big bucks directly to artists.

There's a bit more of a profit margin built into sugar water and $120 shoes. I'd hate to see what guitars would cost if we gave famous rockers multi-million dollar contracts to play certain instruments, lol.

Maybe instrument companies actually prefer people to believe artists play their stuff because they like it more, instead of because that company can pay more.

Re: Tony MacAlpine switches to Ibanez!

Carvins may look goofy, but they play fantastic. And yeah, bang for buck, they're nicer than any standard production line out there. My next axe is probably going to be a Carvin (providing pup swaps are easy enough) or a Suhr. Haven't decided which yet.

"Carvin or a Suhr." That's funny, either bang for the buck or all out and full on expensive and awesome.
