Re: Vai Singing

It was good but not great. I like All About Eve, great song, good vocals and a kick ass guitar solo.

Re: Vai Singing

Good enough. His vocals are better than Satch and Eric Johnson combined (I like all three actually). Considering he's a guitarist, he sings above average. Still a lot less good than others. He get's the job done, but I doubt he'll be invited as a guest singer anytime soon.

Thumbs up

Re: Vai Singing

He's got a beautiful voice! He sings with a lot of passion. It's really cool. You can hear him smack on occasion, though. For instance when he starts singing after the solo in 'The silent within'. Check it out.

Kind regards,

Question

Re: Vai Singing

Also, can ayone clear the following up for me? Does Steve sing on 'Rescue me or bury me.'? It doesn't sound like Devon Townsend, but I think I read somewhere that he did sing it. But it sounds exactly like Steve!?

Kind regards,
Myst and rain

Re: Vai Singing

i thought that too, sounds too much like vai for it to be devvy. I love his vocals on most tracks off Fire Garden, All About Eve, vocals are spot on. Not too sure where he was trying to go with Genocide or LA

Steve sings on 'rescue me or bury me'

I think his voice is getting better and better. His singing on 'dying for your love" is awesome and that one isn't particulary easy either.

And 'Dying for your love' is really difficult. Lot of low notes, followed very fast by really high ones. Great song, by the way.

He should do something with Christina Aguilera! The same way Ricky Martin did!

Re: Vai Singing

Wow!!! Steve's voice better than Eric Johnson's - not a chance in hell. I don't care much for Satch, Vai's, or Johnson's voice; but for vocalists, they're not too bad on the guitar.

All kidding aside, I don't think any of the three take their singing too seriously (at least I hope not). I think they merely dabble in order to add more variety to what they do. Which is melt your face with extraordinary guitar work.

Cheers!

Re: Vai Singing

Vai has a pretty good singing voice, but in most cases I think he's hamstrung by his sometimes clunky lyrics. Content-wise, they may be clever or meaningful, but when the words don't flow, they can make any singer sound like an amateur. Compare Devin Townsend's singing on his solo albums to that on Sex and Religion- it's like night and day. Devin's lyrics have better word flow, though he sometimes throws in some nonsense to make it fit.

Re: Vai Singing

His vocals are better than Satch and Johnson combined? Eric Johnson is not only a phenomenal guitar player but a great singer as well. His voice is not suitable for rock. Nether is Steve's voice. Nevertheless, his tone, vocal range, and agility surpass those of the other two. His rendition of Red House was the only song I could listen to and enjoy. Sure Steve sings a lot better than Satch. That guy should be banned from singing period. Satch may be considered the best singer on his Crystal Planet but he's surely the worst singer on our planet.

Re: Vai Singing

Eric Johnson has a great voice. Some of his best songs are not intrumentals. Satch is definitely bad. Steve did good on that song "get the hell out of here" off of G3
