What is your opinion of death metal?

I like the heavy riffs but the getting raped in the a$$ by a bear screaming has to go.. If it were somewhat melodic singing with occasional im pissed off screaming I would listen to it all the time.

I get it, it's fast and loud, but the whole image of it, the down tuned guitars, retarded dog barking singing and the scary lyrics are just silly.

I don't think there is an image of death metal, you can look however you want
Not all death metal is tuned down, i would say most of it is in standard and halfstep down
It's not easy "barking" for an hour live at pitch
what's wrong with scary lyrics? they can be very insightful and descriptive.

1) If there's no image why do all bands have names like Death, Deicide and Cannible Corpse. Would you wear a shirt of listen to a Death Metal band called Kitten Lovers? Even if they did write their name so it looked like it was written in blood?

2)Half step down is technically downtuned.

3)Doing anything for an hour live isnt easy. Hell pimping aint easy but that doesn't make it good. ALthough pimping is pretty cool.

4)Why would I want to listen to some guy trying to sound like the devil tell me how he's going to kill people and drink blood and rape a goat and stuff. There isn't much insight in that. I don't care how well someone describes skull porking my dead grandpa, it's boring.

It's cool if it's your thing, but you asked for opinions and there's mine.

It's an acquired taste. Like it or not, most of the guitarists in these bands are exceptional players.

I like most DM bands over Vai though.

While some of it is cool and very technically proficient (btw, that's usually good in my book), i just can't take it for very long. It just gets kind of boring and starts to sound the same.

there are some great riffs, but often they get buried and turn into mush... often they're atonal (not that atonal's always bad) and just completely unmelodic and don't really leave me with much.

and as far as singers - im a dream theater fan. I can block out ANY singer! hurray for instrumentals! the other downside to the vocals for me is the usual lack of humor (ok, not just death metal, but most metal,and well, most music in general (yes there are some wonderful exceptions)). i don't know why everyone thinks that 1) vocals are neccessary and 2) they have to be serious or insightful.

the coolest thing for me in death metal is the double bass! f**k yeah!

The double bass thing is cool at times.. But most of the time:

- Single level blast for duration of song
- Corny clean parts if at all.
- "singing" is whack

Nope,.. no death metal for me. Even though I like some songs on my iPOD, but I'd never be able lo listen through a whole CD of blood/hell/death/corpse/mummy/evil/etc.
