Which guitarist do you sound the most like???
Ok.... before you start pooping green twinkies, let me explain.
I do not mean... "Man, I sound just like Malmsteen/Henderix/Clapton/Van Halen (insert other cliche guitarist of your choice here), if you didn't know it was me, you'd swear it was him"....
Only VH sounds like VH, Vaughan sounds like Vaughan, and Gilbert sounds like Gilbert...
BUT
Who do you either A) Emulate your style after the most , or B) When you are playing, you often say "that sounds like something "insert name" would do.
I am looking for the ONE person that you feel you sound like the most....
No ramble on answers of "a cross" of these 27 guitarist.
The One...
I'm waiting for someone to say
Neil Young
..... tell me that guy isn't wearing mittens during some of his solos. LOL!

Well, when I lay back and stay bluesy, I seem to draw a lot of comparisons to David Gilmore, which is odd as I don't really listen to much of his stuff. and, since i play laid back bluesy stuff much better than i shred...

For me, I'd say note choice and some quirky phrasing comparable to Vai, but with the soulfulness (and complete lack of speed) of David Gilmore. I love Dave's playing - he's responsible for more 'perfect solos' that just about anybody, barring Dicky Betts/Duane Allman.

There are two aspects of my phrasing that are similar to Vai's - hitting a pinch harmonic as the first note of a phrase then sliding or slurring out of it; and that neck-pickup slide-whistle sounding stuff you hear in the solos of "Boston Rain Melody," "I'll Be Around" and "Hand On Heart." But I'm a pretty good mimic so I can do passable impersonations of SRV, Hendrix, Satch and Knopfler. But those are all things I can turn on and off (apart from the Vai stuff which I do because it expresses my own emotions). I used to perform at a lot of jam nights at a particular club, and the band would challenge me to mimic various guitarists - they'd call out "Stevie Ray!" or "EVH!" and I'd have to play like them for twelve bars then they'd call out another name. It goes beyond note choice, to the point where you have to hold the pick differently and attack the strings in a totally different way, use different left hand phrasing. Lots of fun but I wouldn't want to rely too much on it because I like my own style.

You tell me:
http://www.digitalsoundplanet.com/Me..._000009114.mp3
I think I have bits and pieces of every guitarist I ever liked. From Satch, to James Murphy, to
John Sykes
.. But, yet, I'm still nowhere near as good as I wanna be.

People tell me I sound like
Paul Gilbert
. It happens quite a lot, I find it quite interesting because other than B.R.O. recently, I have never even looked at a Paul Gilbert tab or tried playing any of his music.

I've been told that there are 'vai-ism's' in my playing.
[not surprising, considering what most people hear is my mp3.com page with the covers]
I also get R.Rhoads, and James Hetfield occasionally, when I'm powerchording.
I dunno, I suppose I am influenced by all of the above so it wouldn't surprise me that much.
All are a compliment to me.

I've been told by children ages 12-19 "That I sound just like that guy..." pointing to my Vai CDs.
People who are older agree to some extent, but I've also been told that I sound a bit like another favorite of mine-
Vito Bratta
, by old metal-heads.

I find it funny that when non-guitarists hear a guitarist play, they automatically relate him to the guitarists they are most familiar with.
[even if you sound nothing like that person]
