Why do you think the guitar has become so popular?

Why do you think the guitar and not an other instrument has become so damn popular in modern music? Is it because it is an easy instrument to play or because of all the different sounds and styles you can produce with it? I'm having a project about this at school and I could need some help

I played trumpet from age 9-14 in band and orchestra, but I lost interest and quit. I've played guitar for the last 21 years. I never lose interest in it.

One great thing about the guitar is that you have access to the entire range of the instrument immediately. There are no pesky strokes or popped blood vessels in the eye to deal with. And, particularly in the case of the electric, the guitar is so expressive. I think that the electric guitar is the modern day equivalent to the violin in terms of how expressive it is. It's easy to change the timbre of the electric, too.

Three huge reasons in my opinion:

1. Because it is cheaper than any other instrument. A person can go buy a fender squire pack for dirt cheap, and millions do.

2. It is very transportable.

3. It is the most expressive instrument. You can make more different noises on it than any other instrument.

O ya, and in general, most people think that playing the guitar is bad ass for some reason.

And when I say "than any other instrument" there are obviously some exceptions.

1) With quality MIDI stuff you can acctually play any instrument you like, even drums!

2) It looks cool, how crap would it look it have a swirled violin.

3) There's a certain statisfaction when you you play so many notes you think the fret board may well set on fire under your hands

4) because you know you love the 80's really!

5) you can play to any level you like. On the violin your ethier good or crap, nothing worse than a beginner on the violin. Whereas guitar you can be quite happy knowing just enough stuff to play Oasis and The White ****es songs, or can take it to the shred extreme (give in your lust for millions of notes) or you can go down the classical route, or the blues, jazz, flamenco...... blah blah blah. Anyway what I mean is it's easy to pick up and you can play any style you like on it.

1.Polyphonic, can play good accomp and lead parts.

2.Large range

3.Infinite sounds available with ease

4.Can be used in almost any style of music (anyone think of a style that the guitar couldn't be played in (and not sound crap))
