Three words,
Uli Jon Roth
.
Yngwie didn't invent shred, he did popularise it. He can almost definitely take credit for being the most pivotal player in neoclassical music. Doesn't mean he invented it.

I'm sorry dude, no one was sweeping full chord arpeggios at Woodstock. Alvin Lee and Hendrix were not shredding at Woodstock. How do you define anything they did back then as "shredding"? Please do share.
Pentatonics became prominently played as triplets at lightning speed because of Yngwie.
String skipping
was pioneered by Yngwie. Scales were played in 32nd notes up and down the neck because of Yngwie. Arpeggios were swept at lightning speed because of Yngwie..and the list goes on.
And, dude, we are talking in the context of modern Rock guitar. I can find someone in 10,000 BC who did every little thing that every single innovator in rock music pioneered but it would be ridiculous for me to belittle EVH's role as a pioneer in introducing lightning speed taps to rock guitar technique because some guy 10,000 years ago in ancient Persia did it on a Rubarb.
Yngwie has in the past been without exception a complete and absolute prick. If he had the amiable and friendly personality of
John Petrucci
then he wouldn't be marginalized as a has-been hair-band guitarist on VH1's "Where Are They Now?". His attitude is the only reason why he does not get the credit he deserves as a musician. However, when analyzed as a musician alone he is no short of a legend and pioneer who deserves his due credit for CREATING the Petruccis and Gilberts of the world.
Well spoken! however there's far too much ignorance out there, people talking about BB King and Hendrix and Alvin Lee in discussions were they don't even belong!!! The word "SHRED" is becoming one of the most misused words of our time! what is the world coming to?!?

Rightly spoken Tom!!! Even Yngwie acknowledges that Ritchie
Blackmore, Uli Jon Roth and
Michael Schenker
pioneered the genere...
Even nowadays Uli Jon Roth is one of the most amazing and fastest guitarists of our time, his SKY guitar is something to be reckon with and only a master like him could play such an instrument (For those not familiar with the man I recommend Metamorphosis, he does a scorching rendition of Vivaldi's Four Seasons)

Excellent! I do stand corrected for neglecting to mention Uli Roth...who by the way Yngwie enthusiastically and openly acknowledges as a huge infleunce.
That's more than can be said for many of his clones. I love
Vinnie Moore
, but for him to claim the similarity in styles between him and Yngwie are coincidence is just untenable. I understand them trying to avoid the Yngwie clone stigma, but after a certain point it starts to look pretty silly.
"Yngwie? Who? Oh no..I never heard of him before..(proceeds to pick out a
harmonic minor scale
pivoting on the top note)...who the heck is THAT?"

How come the UJR Sky guitar never caught on? Its a brilliant design. Yngwie uses one live on occasion and its one of his favorite guitars.

I actually prefer Vinnie to Yngwie too, but I do definitely get your point.
Vinnie's doing fusiony non-Yngwie like stuff now though.

I wonder the same thing... when he came to Chicago with Michael Schenker for
his Metamorphosis tour he left me speechless, his performance was phenomenal to say the least! and he had a couple of Skies with him I was thinking to myself
"Gosh I wish I could get me one of those" but being realistic it takes a great level of technique to play such such a guitar, still I'd love the challenge to hone my skills further with one of those.
Uli has been and always will be one of my biggest influences, back in my early guitar learning days all I wanted to do was to play like Michael Schenker, Uli Jon Roth and
David Gilmour
...what a dreamer!

Wow -- unbelievable! LMAO!
I will keep that sound clip forever.
Anyway, personally I don't hate Yngwie, I just have very little interest in his music. Technical;ly he's pretty good, but I find his solos boring. Good vibrato, though. I don't know what it is about Yngwie... my girlfriend really dislikes him even after hearing him just a few times. She said he's a w***er. LOL...

Re: Why is Yngwie so hated?
Whether or not Yngwie invented anything (which is debatable enough on its own) is irrelevant to the issue of whether people should like and/or respect his work. I give him credit for being one of the fastest and most technical players in the world. However, I have never heard anything from him yet that I didn't think sucked. Fast shredding and stage antics alone do not make for quality music. All of the tone, melody, soul, etc. are lost on the endless, boring episodes of ridiculous embellishment in a vain attempt to impress us with how many notes per second he can play. The bottom line is that if people liked his work as much as more popular players,he would be credited as much as those players. And it doesn't help that he tops it all by acting like a complete prick all the time.
But to each their own.

Re: Why is Yngwie so hated?
Very nicely put ryan
As others have said, it's Yngwie the "PERSON" that is hated.
I was there at the G3 show in the front row in Denver. Umm can you say "Pompus" A$$!!!!!!
He is so full of himself it is sickening. I mean, it's good to love yourself, but come on!!! Just his whole demeaner annoys me.
Plus his music is soooooo repetative. Same runs over and over again and again! I did like his first couple releases. He should have stopped after "I am a Viking!

Re: Why is Yngwie so hated?
For me, it's his personality more than anything. I haven't heard a whole lot of his music, but some of the stuff I've heard, I do like. And while I generally don't care about the personal lives of musicians / actors / authors / whatever, there comes a point where someone is such a jerk that I find it hard to separate the person from the work.
I do think he deserves a ton of credit though. Like it or not, he did popularize neo-classical shredding. He might not have been the first to do it, but he was the one that made it popular. (The same way EVH wasn't the first person to tap.) Without Malmsteen we may never have heard of Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker,
Marty Friedman
,
Tony MacAlpine
, Vinnie Moore, Chris Impelliteri, Greg Howe, etc, etc. (Pretty much all the Shrapnel guys.

Re: Why is Yngwie so hated?
Yngwie seems as a person like a major ass. That tape of him on the plane... like holy **** dude just smack the bitch and throw her off the plane, otherwise shut the **** up and sit down, ya know?
As a musician, he's just boring. Once you heard a solo, you heard all the Yngwie there is to hear.

Aren't these in fact two good reasons to dislike Yngwie?
