Why is Yngwie so hated?

Bigshred..... I define "shred guitar" as it refers to a virtuosic, highly technical style of playing the instrument. Yeah, something both Lee and Hendrix were doing for there time. Sorry that just doesn't fit your time line or obviously your narrow definition of "shred". Remember, it was stated in the original post he (Yngwie) was the inventor of shred! By the way, you still skipped over DiMeola? I think he was sweep picking and arpeggiating, yes? Guess I hit a nerve!! You then concede to UJR being one of his influences. Like everyone has said.... you have to give credit when due, whether it was 10,000 yrs. ago or yesterday! I never said the guy couldn't play fast Neoclassical chops but one dimensional at best, that's not dismissive IMO just factual. If your definition of "shred " only includes those who are "sweeping full chord arpeggios" or playing Neoclassical chops, then you have eliminated many good players. What was that about dismissive behavior? Got to love it ALL! Heck, next someone will claim Yngwie invented the electric guitar (rhubarb stick), we all know it was Muddy Waters!

i dont hate yngwie.. but hate to say this.. his music is boring soemtimes.. or maybe it is how classic sounds? i love classic but i just cant play classic classic hehe

let's look at the facts...

yngwie is a good neo classical shredder.
to everyone not purely into neo classical, he's boring as shiyte.

yngwies strongest factor- what he lacks in feel, emotion and phrasing in his playing he totally makes up for by kicking and swinging his guitar around on every 32nd note.

he has focking fury.. and he may unleash it.

here is an example of him battling a dragon with his focking fury..


yngwie is an absolute dickhead BUT in his defence..his ego is only amazingly huge so it can keep up with all his 32nd note kicks and dragon battles.

As a person- he comes off as a pompous jerk with a rockstar attitude that hasn't matched his record sales since the early 80s.

As a musician- he's one of the most stagnant players in the genre of technical guitar. The man hasn't made an improvement to his playing in 20 years.

Okay, so I just check in to see if anyone came up with a truly legitimate reason for my original question of why they hate Yngwie and this is mostly what I've gotten so far:

He is a horrible person, but a great guitarist.

Because his music is very boring???

His attitude is very self centered.

It is all just too repetitive.

Basically he is a self-centered jerk.

His ego is bigger than his art.

My girlfriend really dislikes him.

A complete prick all the time.

It's his personality more than anything.

a major ass.

Yngiwe Fu**ing nobody.

All of these answers are superficial cop-outs my friends. They are interesting observations but they are certainly not reasons to hate another human being, especially a guy who didn't do anything against any of you personally.

It seems that only one person (quik) got it right and I quote:

"I think that many guitarists dislike him because his virtuosity makes them feel inadequate".

Absolutely correct quik, a very perceptive comment and the only truly legitimate answer there can be. You win the contest, to claim your Fender YJM Strat go to Yngwie's house in the middle of the night and break a window. Doesn't matter which window, he keeps a dozen strats in every room).

Semantics - "hate" is an emotion reserved for rare occasions, but the actual word has been used these days (especially on the net) to describe a range of feelings. Why did you ask if we "hated" Yngwie then? That question implied that either we really do hate him, or, taking the word's new colloquial meaning, we "dislike" him, and we tried to answer the latter. All the answers you quoted (mabe except "My girlfriend really dislikes him" and "Yngwie F****** nobody") are very legitimate reasons to dislike an artist.

Besides, if we hated Yngwie for his ability we would also hate, say, Steve Vai, and judging by the posts on this forum it doesn't look this way.

I don't know why I am arguing this, but I just don't like when people put a spin (often very badly) on everything just to match their point of view...

That says it ALL. Hate Him??? He made royalties off my purchase. JJ.... go back and read some of the posts again. Most never stated they hated him! Personally, I just clarified what he didn't "invent", Innovator??? NOT! He did expand on something any disciplined classical guitarist is REQUIRED to know. (ie: he plugged in to a Marshall and ran his chops) I think "jem7vwh" from Nacogdoches, Texas should have won!

P.S. If the door prize was a YJM Fender model.... I'll bet most would trade it for a JEM or at least an EJ model Strat.
