Re: Why is Yngwie so hated?
How could I be jealous of Yng????
I'm skinnier than he is
One thing that did piss me off at the G3 show here in Denver was when he smashed his strat into a million pieces. Come on man, who does he think he is......Pete Townsend
He could have given that strat to some kid who cannot afford to buy a guitar. But nope! Too selfish. Besides....that would have tarnished his a-hole image and people might start thinking he's turned "nicey nicey"
Also, I was in the front row at that show about 5 feet from him when he smashed it and I got a feckin splinter in my eye
I nearly had to miss the the two REAL guitarist in the show

The strat massacre was disgusting. That was while not a Yngwie signiture, still a great guitar that Yngwie destroyed.
I know Vai used to break guitars, but at least they were cheapo RGs, and he used the same few over and over. And I've seen video's of him in the eighties where he threw the guitar into the crowd, of course knowing whoever got it was going to appreciate it. Or bitch about being beaned in the head. Whatever.

Plus, 1 is only the way it is due to the evolution of language, which basically means, too many people used the word wrong for so long, its kind of lost its meaning. The original definition is an artist, especially a musician that has attained technical mastery of their art.
I look at it this way, if you're a shredder, you're not necessarily a virtuoso, if you're a virtuoso, you should be able to shred.
Yeah, whatever. Hendrix did have mastery of his art, he could communicate with his art in a way that few others have ever been able to. So, it doesn't broaden the scope of the definition, it narrows it.
Lets separate shredder and virtuoso, two way different things. YJM is just feeding us back classical lines (unfortunately the same ones repeated way too much) that have existing for years, in fact you can narrow some of his stuff down to Bach lines and cadences. I'm not dis'n him, I liked his playing when he came out, he just didn't evolve, his 1st disc is still the freshest sounding one. He also can't communicate through his art like Hendrix could. I know, I'm stating an opinion, but I don't think I'm sticking my neck out far here.
I dislike him (agreed Glen, hate is the wrong word) as a person because of his pomposity (is that a word?) and attitude toward others. Saying the wrong thing once or twice and being misunderstood when you are a public figure is one thing, but he seems to continuously disregard/disrespect others.

Mastery, yes. Technical mastery NO. I don't care how well it communicates (and it does nothing for me), that doesn't consitute TECHNICAL mastery. That word is EXTREMELY misused to the point where the dictionaries have had to explain what people think it means.
And did I ever say that I thought Yngwie was a virtuoso?

Re: Why is Yngwie so hated?
exactly, most rock stars are egotistical ****ers so don't just blame poor old Yng. How many other guitarists have smashed up there guitars on stage, it's all in the name of showmanship, take it how you will but Yngwie isn't the only one who has done it .. hendrix, blackmore e.t.c. Actually on the live in Denver, if you look closely Yngwie swaps guitars towards the end and it's actually a Squier Affinity strat, then he throws it into the audience .. come on, not really selfish ..

Hey Pawel, JJ here. I couldn't sgree with you more. I sincerely believe that Jason Becker was way more talented than Yngwie (or any other shred guitarist out there). IMHO his solo album "Perpetual Burn" stands as very the pinnacle of shred. Never topped before or since. I truly beieve that were it not for the cruel hand of fate that he would have eclipsed Yngwie very quickly. Jason, your talent was not of this earth.

Re: Why is Yngwie so hated?
Yeah but he got away from shred with the
David Lee Roth
album. And i f**king LOVED that.I was absolutely gutted that he couldn't do the tour (saw Roth in '91 i think at wembley supporting that album) and that was the first i heard of his illness.

Yngwie created a style, put his creation on tape and it stands today as proof of who really "invented" this genre of playing.
Blackmore was already doing this stuff in the 70's with Deep Purple plus there are recordings with
Shawn Lane
where you hear "shred guitar" playing.

Vinnie is great. I love his "Mind's Eye" album from 1986 a true classic.

O.k I'll explain especially for you .. take for example a well respected chef who is modest, people appreciate his talent and dedication e.t.c. and take the food as it is, now imagine that chef was to be the complete opposite of moddest and was self assured to the point of arrogance, claiming how his food is (e.g.) 'the best in the world' e.t.c people wouldn't be as fond of him because it would take away that special something from him
that's obvious but that wasn't the way you wrote your point, you insinuated that because of that arrogance he has, we were jealous.

..no. are you saying to me no-one who hates Yngwie is jealous of him? What my opinion is that there is some people who hate him that are jealous of his skill, hence why i use the word 'some' not 'everyone' .. maybe your not jealous of him, i never accused you of being so but i dislike how people judge a musician based on personality.
lol again your posts insinuate different, looked very much to me like you were saying WE were jealous. anyway..
we aren't judging his music on personality.
it's clear if you actually read the topic we judge his music on his music and it bores the crap outta most of us
and we judge his personality on his personality and we see there that he's a freakin diickhead :P

I'm afraid to say i have never stated something as fact, maybe you've just mis-interpreted my comments
pls read my sentence you quoted til you get it. it means no need to come in saying AS IF/LIKE it's a fact, "what some ppl ARE jealous of is bla bla" and obviously you were insinuating that you mean US cos when i said WE aren't jealous you said NO, ppl are jealous cos...., see how that insinuates us? it's pretty obvious man
back on topic..
i have a theory that yngwie's focking fury(that he unleashes on dragons remember) holds back his musical creativity and he kicks and swings his guitar around all day long cos he's pissed off at dragons

Re: Why is Yngwie so hated?
Isn't that Mike Varney guy responsible for discovering Yngwie? I read somewhere that Yngwie sent a tape from Sweden to Mike's Spotlight column in Guitar Player mag way back when and Mike liked it so much that he paid for Yngwie to come to the states. If this is true then we have Mike to thank (or curse) for bringing us the fooking fury. I say thanks mike.
