Year Zero

Most amazing musical event ever in modern recording history? I think so.

Re: Year Zero

I've been waiting for this to come out, but I still havent gotten around to picking it up. I saw the video on you tube though and it was damn good. Much better than With Teeth, which I found to be a pretty dissapointing album.
I got to see NIN for free last summer at Summerfest, best free concert ever.

Re: Year Zero

I've been immersed in the Year Zero 'ARG' with all the websites, phone numbers, weird billboards, videos, et cetera for a couple months. Amazing and creepy. It's one thing to have innovative album artwork and packaging, but it's another thing to have the "packaging" include a virtual world. Thankfully, the album is awesome too (totally owns With Teeth). I know that NIN isn't for everyone (especially here, the last time they were brought up, there was a 7-page flame thread), but you've gotta admire the effort put into this whole thing.

Re: Year Zero

Here's what I've discerned of the story so far, from all the various websites, art, orchestrated RL events, and lyrics to the album. This doesn't even scratch the surface of how vast the effort that has gone into this actually is. Its truly mindblowing when you dig into it. It centers around a dystopian vision of society in the year 2022. 2022 is referred to as "Year Zero" due to an undisclosed event, and the calendar has been re-written to reflect its new designation. ( I.E. 2007 becomes year -15)

The binary on the face of the CD translates into Exterminal.net. Its a "government" website pertaining to some sort of "Bureau of Morality" prison camp. You'll find transcripts of conversations, and photographs of evidence.

The government has started putting a "biological counteragent" called "Parepin" in the water. This drug apparently has lethargic and hallucinogenic side effects.

www.iamtryingtobelieve.com

The "Bureau of Morality" is apparently a major government department in this timeline. They regulate social expression, art and free speech. There is no longer any separation between church and state, and a persons morality and patriotism is reflected by their "citizenship score". "Citizenship score" determines things like your eligibility to work and receive insurance benefits, credit, and other factors.

Citizens are tracked via microchip.

http://www.operationchipsweep.net/

There is several forms of resistance refered to. Several sites deal with nonviolent resistance, one site deals with violent resistance. The best I've found so far is scientific resistance. It has something to do with sending information back through time via the internet, in hopes of averting the events that result in the current 2022. From what I've gathered, the websites that appear distorted are distorted as a result of information being sent back through time.

http://www.securebroadcastinformatics.com/
http://www.solutionsbackwardsinitiative.net/pilgrims/

One site talks about foriegn countries opinions of the new developments in America. One site talks about how to remove your microchip. One site talks about selecting proper targets and blowing up government buildings and offices and killing people in general.

http://www.artisresistance.com/
www.opensourceresistance.com (this site is supposed to be a present day site, notice the lack of distortion)

Some sort of religious phenomena is occurring, referred to throughout as "The Presence". It's represented as a giant hand coming from the sky, and having an undefined but profound emotional effect on anyone in close proximity. The song "The Warning" is all about this, and man is it a great song when you know what its talking about. I've attached a link to a photo that's been found as a result of people researching this much more thoroughly than I ever will. Apparently, a burst of static present at the end of the original leaked mp3 file "My Violent Heart", when run through a spectrometer, reveals this image of "The Presence". Insanity!

More sites that reference or talk about "The Presence".

There's a wiki filled with information people have already discovered about all this, I hope you'll check it out. Theres so much more.

www.ninwiki.com

You can listen to the whole album free here. (that by itself is revolutionary!)

http://yearzero.nin.com

I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I have! From what I've heard, this album is the first of three.....

That's like the Aphex Twin song where Richard D. James put his face in the song when you looked at it through a spectrometer. For anyone not familiar with Aphex Twin, a trademark of his is putting his face on different bodies.

I really love NIN and I haven't grabbed this album. Aphex Twin kicks ass.

More like a crushing disappointment. Trent has not made a quality album since "Broken". I so wish he (Trent) would get pissed again and make something that does not sound like whining.

I have to agree with Ayrton on this one. NIN has been very disappointing for the past decade, IMHO.
Can't say I'm in a rush to get this album.

Re: Year Zero

Some of the sites have some pretty good black humor in them, too. Take the quiz on www.cedocore.com and look at the side-effects of the drug they suggest you take, or the real estate market evalutions on www.viabilityindex.com. "Memphis, TN... Elvis died here, and so can you!!!"
