Just another reason why I have a problem with Les Pauls.

Never mind the fact that those guitars are practically unplayable - you could fund a kid's entire college education with that kind of money.

There is so much bourgeois / nouveau riche pretentiousness around the Gibson brand name and the whole "vintage" thing that it makes me want to vomit.

I'll be watching this auction...

Good idea, dislike the entire company because some people can and will pay a rediculous amount of money for their product. The thought that more than likely it wont be bought to be played doesnt enter your mind, nor does the thought that the guitar could very easily be playable.

It's a desireable thing to collect that is damn near impossible to find, hence the bloated price.

I'll argue the unplayable remark. I think guys with small hands have a hard time playing them maybe.

Some people have made offers - I wonder what they're offering. What do you guys think it's worth?

Hahaha, 4 offers made and all declined. I guess they weren't over $125,000

Chances are the guy doesnt want to sell it on **** and have to pay all their fees. He can list it there to get interst, then let it close without selling it and sell it off **** and only have to pay listing fees.

At that point you might as well put it on craigslist in the major cities

That makes sense. Looking at the ad - I was thinking to myself "there's gotta be a better way to sell a guitar like that". I was surprised he was selling it on the bay. As for the value - I've got no idea what guitars such as this go for. I figured a lot, but $125,000?

Wow - and even if some of those offers were $50,000 - thats a hell of a lot of money.

It won't be bought to be played. Fantastic.

Only guitar players will know what the (supposed) value of a 1957 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop is. Unlike a fine wine or champagne that has aged well that everyone can enjoy, this Les Paul will only be valued by guitar players. But since not everybody is a guitar player, the owner will not be able to convey the value of it to someone who has never touched a guitar before, unlike with fine wine or champagne, which anyone can enjoy because everybody has taste buds.

So even once the new owner gets this Les Paul - he might impress a couple of his guitar playing friends - he might not even have any such friends - in which case the only person he can impress is himself. Good job, dumbass, you just threw $50,000 into a six string that most people don't know squiddly twat about. And you probably won't even play it.

Never mind. I'll just keep enjoying nailing $500 neck-thru MIJ Jackson USA quality Charvel Model Series guitars on **** while everyone else falls for the hype and pays up for guitars that I have yet to see any magic in. I agree, it's true that Les Paul aren't unplayable, but compared to a Charvel or Ibanez neck... why would you even bother? P.S. I'm six foot three so hand size is not an issue for me.

Re: $125,000 LP on the bay, let's watch together shall we?

$125 is about the current going rate for a 57GT in that condition. And the guy who buys it, most likely for investment, will surely prove a real schmuck when it's selling for twice that in the next 10-20 years. What morons they must be.

Re: $125,000 LP on the bay, let's watch together shall we?

I have to say, the LP is extremely easy and comfortable to play. I have played Ibanez for over 20 years, and I thought I would have a tough time adjusting to the thicker neck, but I didn't. Yes, I think it is crazy to pay that much for a guitar, but if you can afford it, who cares what anyone else thinks. Plenty of people think it is crazy to spend $1000 for a guitar. The people saying Gibson quality is crap, and the necks are unplayable have probably never owned one.

Yeah it's ridiculous.

I'm sure nobody who pays $125,000 for a guitar is thinking of playing it. It's an investment, and like Rich said - a pretty damn good one. I wish I could sell my guitar for $125k
