Buying off E-bay

Ok guys, as strange as it may seem, I have never dealt with anyone off of E-bay. Well right now I am looking at an item that I desperately want. I am about to place my first bid. But first of all, is there anything that you would tell a first time E-bay'er to watch out for? Is there a way to cancel your bid once you have placed it, etc?

Re: Buying off E-bay

Watch out for everything.

Seriously though, a few key things:
1) Always check their feedback
2) be very reluctant to buy from someone with zero or minimal transactions.
3) be very reluctant to buy from someone with low feedback numbers. (go for 98 to 100% - if they've sold dozens of items, it's not unusual for there to be whiners in the bunch - but read the negative feedback)
4) be wary of buying an item (like a guitar) that doesn't have several good pictures AND good descriptions as to the condition.
5) be wary of buying an expensive item from someone who has a history of only a couple of cheap items - some scammers come on and buy/sell a couple of cheap items and then work the scam on a larger item. (i.e. what would someone who bought/sold a couple of dolls be doing with a pristine Jem? - not that it's totally impossible)
6) if they are close to your area, email them and see if you can go see the item before you buy.
7) you are better protected if you buy with paypal secured by a credit card.
If it's a foreign auction, remember that you will usually have to pay customs on an item as well, which most sellers don't tell you about - it could be a lot for an expensive item.

I've never tried to cancel a bid but I know there is a policy on e8ay you can read about it. I think it's up to the seller to allow you to cancel your bid, but be straight - you shouldn't bid unless you are sure you want an item.

Bid at the last moment. At this point, you should know if you want the item or not.

Re: Buying off E-bay

Rich put together some great advice at ibanezrules.com,. just click on the evilbay link at the top of his page and you will have plenty of information on what to look for. Read it thoroughly. It is easy to get scammed, but if you do your research you can find good deals at times. You can also consider purchasing a guitar off the classifieds here at jemsite.com and be relatively assured that if somebody is up to no good, EVERYBODY is going to know about it.

Re: Buying off E-bay

To be honest buying off e8ay is like wading through a lake of treacle that is infested with anti personel mines. It is possible to do but it just takes a long time and you have to be realy careful as you go.
I bought my DY from a guy in California and had no probs. 15 or so photo's were posted up and he had 100% pos feedback. It's the most beautiful guitar I've ever owned.
I bought a strat copy from a guy in London for £49 (also 100% feedback, lots of photo's etc) and it was a complete and utter dog, pretty much unplayable.
The lesson is....with e8ay you'll win some and lose some but most of it is plain old common sense...........pfft.. Why on Earth did I think that a brand new Strat copy selling for £49 was ever gonna be anything other than a plank *shrugs*

LOL

Re: Buying off E-bay

I have never had a bad **** sale. Of course I have not had that many, but I've chosen them wisely.

A seller with 1000s of feedback rating at 99.6% or higher is usually trustworhy. I allow tops of 4 negative feedbacks for every 1000 but not much more. Also if you read some of their negative feedback, sometimes it appears someone meant to mark positive but checked negative by mistake.

But what you should do is view the seller's profile and check for mutually withdrawn feedback and consider those bad. There are a lot of sellers who if you leave them bad or neutral feedback, they leave you bad feedback and offer to remove it if you remove yours.

On top of that, read through the items description, check pictures and if you have a good feeling about them and what they say seems to match what you see, then go for it. I've bought my SL-X via eb8y and they said it was a used head with a bit of wear, and it's near mint.

Thats right. Be careful, use your head, and sometimes great deals can be too great. Also, I would really recommend the Ads on this site rather than that.

Re: Buying off E-bay

The other obvious things to watch for are that the photos on the ad are of the genuine article for sale- if you are looking at, say a JEM 7VW and the only photos are obviously from the Ibanez catalogue/website, or some such document - BEWARE!!!!!! Most genuine sellers will include photos which show the item in their home/garage/shed/driveway - and quite a few will have detail photos of any flaws in the item -the old adage, "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is" holds true, and don't bid until the end - you only need to put in one bid - the winning one - all the other bids simply drive the price up!

Re: Buying off E-bay

I've bought and sold through e bay about 50 times. About 5% of sellers never bothered to post feedback - even after I left a very positive feedback for them. I have one negative from a guy whose auction ended at 7:00 PM on a Friday when my family and I left town for the weekend and I was away from my computer. I got home on Sunday, paid for the item, and checked my profile. The plank had already left me negative feedback less than 48 hours after the damn auction ended. On top of that, the item was a $7.50 VHS videotape! Some folks should just stay away from e bay. Especially the ones that believe that the whole world is revolving around their piddley little auction.

Re: Buying off E-bay

Well, looks like I won't have to be dealing with **** as of now. Just bought a 1991 Blue RG550 from Eric (ericsguitars.com) after seeing his ad in the Classified section.

Thanks for the tips though. I will defintely keep them in mind whenever I do venture into the lands of the 'Bay.
