Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
Jemsiters, pretty soon the prototype 2x12 cab will be complete, I have a range of these on the drawing board and I simply would like to gauge interest among you and hear opinion.
these are not the rectangular boxes that are pretty much standard fare for most cabs, they are handcrafted, tuned to enhance certain frequencies and damn cool looking.
the tunings are planned to be standard - for rock, baritone, metal - geared for 7 strings etc and total custom (you spec the Hz range) all cabs will feature celestions of different types and depending on spec asymetrical design.
so, my question is, would you buy something like this to enhance your sound / tone ?
if you dont wanna / cant be bothered to type then just hit yea or nea in the poll !
Cheers

Re: Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
The thing with tuned cabs is that I just don't get the attraction...if the tuning is low down, then surely notes will woof, if its high up, surely you'll get a nasal tone with a big mirange but no low end...
I'd be itnerested to hear demos, same guitar, same amp/mics, different cabs, tuned to different frequencies, and throw in a standard cabinet to compare them against.

Re: Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
I'm familiar with tuning an enclosure for car audio and home audio gear. I would assume the same principles would hold true for a guitar cab. I would have to see pros and cons before making a decision, but would definately check it out.

Re: Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
Honestly, we have a great
custom cab
company in america named Lopoline.. so I dont know how popular your cabs would be over here.. Sorry to say, its just the shipping would hurt.
If theres no custom cab place in the UK though, I think it would be very beneficial to make unloaded cabs for around 250-300 (US, do the conversion rate)

Re: Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
A little pic of my custom cab. It's not tuned to any of my spesification. Other than I told the builder to make it good for 80's hair metal, in addition to "normal" music. Two different speakers, and speakon stereo. That's about it. And the nice fur, of course.
How can you play without it? The pink front reacts to black light. Really lights up.

To answer your question. If I was sure it would improve my tone, I would consider buying. Price and looks would be important for me (big surprise about the looks...). At the other end of the stick, there are already loads of different cabs out there. So yours would have to offer something special. I would suggest fur.

How heavey are they? and how much would they be unloaded?
Weight is my biggest concern as heaving stuff around is killing me

Re: Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
Hi Steve, there is a lightweight design on the drawing board, it will use those neodymium magnet spearkers (century) from
celestion
that are lighter and more powerful.
the carcass still has to be fairly hefty though to stop the cab walking off as you play it loud
one other thing to note is that all the cabs are going to be modular and stackable, they will also be ok for 4, 8 and 16 ohms each so plugging in 1 cab or 4 will be do-able..

Re: Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
for me being loud is not important. Its about tone, weight and size (in that order)
Whatever amp Im playing always gets mic'd and put through the PA so being able to punch to the back of an auditorium from the back of stage left isnt important. Even being able to hear it on stage isnt very important as I wander about alot and hence usually only hear myself through the monitors on stage.
something under 30lbs would be great... something under 20lbs devine.

Re: Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
Have you checked Dr Decibel on the Celestion site? Particularly the section on cabinet design and Thiele Small parameters. Having said that, at the moment I use a pair of marshall 2x12s and a laney head and the cabs are slightly smaller in width than the head so I'd be really intersted in a pair of 2x12s (one angled) of the right size... (I could end up owing you a load of cash if you're not careful
)
(I'll get the neck dimensions to you soon for the fireman...)
Best
Jim

Re: Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
Jim, the small thiele parameters are not available (read not forthcoming) for some of the speakers i want to incorporate into designs because like they say on the site, you can damage the speakers quite badly with a badly designed cabinet. this is pretty understandable because otherwise we could keep destroying speakers and getting them replaced I guess.. we are tuning below the frequecies that they are talking about anyway but.... there is a design that incorporates bass speaker coupled with a guitar speaker on the go.. this should prove pretty good, especially for de-tuners or 7 string players.
this isnt too big of a problem because there are other testing facilities available where these can be plotted, once the data is gathered then proper cab tuning without destroying speaker cones is possible
how do you find your marshall cabs ?
I have a 1922 and while its got good speakers, im not exactly in love with it - well obviously otherwise I woud be embarking on this exercise.

Re: Custom Cabs - looking for opinion
Yup, i'm sure things as they commonly are can be improved upon, me, I'm a bit of a traditionallist, guitars have to have 12" speakers and nowt else will do!
As for the marshalls, I use the valvestate cabs which I know are not sonically the best but they do fit in my car and actually, in a band with bass, keys, and two guitars competing to be heard they work pretty well, on their own they do lack warmth/richness... I'm looking forward to trying my mates 1922 in the new year to compare the difference hence I might need a cab upgrade in the future!
