DNA Price - Since the VSK was fun
okay -
the listing for the JEM DNA on the bay was entertaining, a starting bid of $10,500? It seems as crazy to me as the guy asking for 7K for his peavy vandenberg black on white puzzle graphic. I'll be watching this auction for fun.

Re: DNA Price - Since the VSK was fun
That's my old DNA - I sold it to buy something else since I have several more and I felt like it was the weakest swirl of the bunch. The condition (when I sold it) was dead mint. I didn't get $10,500 for it, that's for sure. Great guitar though.

What are they worth these days?

I would say it depends on the swirl. I think, a top swirl could be worth 10 K. Others 5-6 K
A few years ago someone wanted mine for 8000 €.

That's probably because you can afford it, and you got a genuine interest for guitars. It might be hard to grasp for some that others value guitars more, or money less, than they do.
There are many auctions to laugh at, I do not think these are the worst. If someone can afford it, and the same person wants it, the only laughing will be from the buyer and the seller. While we are left with nothing but a long nose.

Re: DNA Price - Since the VSK was fun
A DNA could absolutely command 5 figures. Swirl pattern and condition would play heavily into that, but these are by far the most unique Jems ever made and not something that will ever happen again. If you are trying to find one now (after 12 years) in top (unplayed) condition it will be a long and daunting task!!

Re: DNA Price - Since the VSK was fun
You could just have 5 custom DNAs made for the same price.
I'll never pay even $4000 for a guitar.
I could have a custom one made to look just like it for so much less.

And that's cool, but as a collector, I can tell you I find zero value in look-alikes or replicas. Much like some have a ceiling regarding what they will pay for a guitar, I personally would not put any amount of money into a replica or copy of the real thing.

Why is nobody talking about the truely rediculous "appraisal" from an antiques dealer for $25,000.

Well, you could have a guitar made that looks like a DNA but would it have Vai's DNA in it? That to me kind of defeats the object somewhat
I have to admit, I don't think I'd pay 10k for a guitar either, but most of mine would set me back over 4 thousand dollars if I was to try and replace them in today's market so my cutoff threshold is seemingly between 4 and 10!!!

The guy that did the appraisal is the guy I sold it to. Interesting.

Re: DNA Price - Since the VSK was fun
5 DNA replicas for the same money and none of them would look anything like a real DNA to anyone who knows anything about what real DNA's look like. Your point however is totally valid.
People covert different things and I believe that a DNA if well kept will increase in value as it is not so much just a guitar but more a part of Ibanez guitar history.
Plus how many folks can come on here and say "hey that was my guitar!" from a cursory glance of a picture of one guitar out of the trillion odd guitars on the planet?
