Not sure where to post this, so i figured off topic would be a good place.

And thats right, i might buy a guitar off EvilBay! Any real tips other than actually reading the sellers feedback/verify that he's actually a real person? I dun wanna get burned or anything.

1. make sure they don't live outside the US, as it makes things even more difficult when addressing plausible issues.

2. Personally, I like to buy from sellers whom have had an account for a number of years on the bay.

3. Try to see the last few items the seller sold. For example, if the last items were flower vases and now the seller is selling a PRS McCarthy, there's something fishy there (IMO).

Cool i guess
The item that i'm looking at has had an account since 2000. And he's sold a bunch of guitar crap. Sweet deal, i say. We'll just see if the item stays in my price range.

Re: Eaby tips?

These aren't to do with security, but there's a couple of things I've found that help to get the best price possible in an auction.

In terms of actually placing a bid, I find there's no point in placing a bid until the last minute if there are already bidders. You will just get outbid and push the price up. Of course, if there are no bidders, placing a bid early might actually help deter other bidders because they know they will have competition. In this situation I wouldn't bid much more than the starting price. That way if someone outbids me, chances are it won't be by much and it will still be winnable within my budget. Even if I am the only bidder in the last few moments, I'll bid with my maximum price just before the end so nobody can snipe it from me.

If you are outbid or if there are already bidders, leave it as late as possible, decide on your maximum price and stick to it. There's no need to get into a bidding war and end up paying more than you wanted to. If you don't win then shrug it off and wait for the next one to come along.

Wait...so it has no bids now, and there's 30 minutes left. Should i place a bid 1$ over starting price and then set up eaby's autobid to my maximum?

If there's 30 minutes left, I'd bid the starting price.

Wait till there's ten seconds left and regardless of whether there's other bidders or not, bid your maximum.

Wait...so then dont use eaby's auto outbid system that they have?
Because otherwise i could be wasting monies!
And being that i just turned 17, monies are valuable!

All the auto-outbid thing will do is up the ante for others trying to outbid you. Their maximum might be lower than yours, but if they see they are winning they may never actually bid that much, which means you will pay less.

So its good, right? either way, i just placed the minimum bid right now.

So enter my maximum bid into the max bid thing now, right? and then it auto ante's up, right?

Don't bid until the end. I don't know the circumstances but seeing an auction that has no bids will usually lull a snipe bidder into just bidding the opening, or slightly over it. Then you come along and hammer him with your max.

I'm not placing a bid. Just putting my auto bid into the eaby auto bid thing. Or are snipers so accurate that the autobid wont go through?

Oh, btw rich, this is the guy who was debating buying that rg 1550. lol
I'm trying to get a Aniv. 550.

Why not be the first bidder as well? Being the first bidder deters others from bidding, and bidding at the last minute gives you maximum chance of winning. I do both.

Chill out, you're doing well.

Wait till the last minute and put down your maximum bid.
