Re: IS THIS A FAKE JEM/UV??... here (& only here) is where to ask & discuss

Nope
I think they recently changed the bridge and a few years back changed from Ebony to rosewood on the fretboard, but all the stuff that's wrong with you guitar hasn't changed.

Jeez, I hope you get your money back.

Hindsight is 20-20. You should've done more homework before dropping the 600$.

Good luck!

This guy has 54....yes, 54 Jem 20ths for sale @ $1700 ea.
I almost most certain it's a fake but I'll let the Jem experts say for sure...

Sigh.

Because this thread (http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f15/wh...tml#post997593) got closed down, and this is apparently the only thread where we're allowed to ask or answer questions about the authenticity of older JEMs... I'd like to respond to the last post in that thread:

Quote:
ok, but if it is a custom, I smell a custom replice and not an original Ibanez product.
I apologize in advance if I'm wrong and the authenticity of the parts (body and neck) is proven.
Believe it or not, there was at one time a huge market for swapping out parts on our JEMs and RGs. Just because two parts didn't come off the assembly line together does not automatically make them "fake". These guitars are approaching 25 years old, there are bound to be plenty of them out there that don't quite "add up" but aren't fakes.

The guitar in question certainly does not look like a forgery to me. I'd be willing to bet that it's just a FrankenJEM made out of a genuine DY body and a genuine PBK neck. I actually have a PBK neck here that's wanting a body and I'd be pissed as all hell if, after finding a body for it, people started telling me the guitar's a fake simply because it didn't come out of the factory assembled as I want.

I fully respect jumping on the people who are selling chibanez fakes and blatant forgeries, but I don't think we need to act like rabid dogs every time a used guitar comes up that wasn't quite a production model.

I'm sure there was a good reason for a moderator to close that thread. I doubt that reason was to respond to it in a different thread.

Thread closed with a link to this thread. I can only assume the point was that discussion of such topics are only allowed in here.

Do music stores make sure they are not buying/reselling fakes? I went to my local guitar store and saw a used Jem (I think it's a 505) for $675. Is this a fair price for a used one? I'll try and get a picture the next time I go and post it here before I buy it.

Not sure people in music stores may be qualified to know if a guitar is a fake. Remember, lots more than just Ibanez gets copied.

Highly unlikely that it's a 505, as they've only just been introduced.
So it's probably a 555 and $675 is too much as you can pick up proper Jems for under $1000 (see DBK for $675 thread)

Re: IS THIS A FAKE JEM/UV??... here (& only here) is where to ask & discuss

Yeah, but that $675 DBK was a fluke. Also, the DBK has always had a pretty low desirability factor for a JEM.

Depending on condition, I don't think that's a bad price for a 555. If you're really interested in buying it, snap off a picture and post it here, we'll let you know if it's a good deal or not after we determine what guitar it actually is. Eviltwin is right, it's highly unlikely that it's a 505, they literally were just released, and they'll street for a lot more than $700.

Did you get your money back?

I get really sad when I see stories like this. You know the pawn shop had an idea it was fake or they wouldn't have sold it for $600. It is scary that they copy these so closely that it is hard to tell in pictures sometimes, but they leave out the important details that makes a guitar real, not just the screw placement, but the fretwork and playability, and the sound that you don't really know until you have played a real one in person.
