Re: Legacy One Guitars OFFICIAL THREAD

Some nice looking work there John (like the birdseye maple boards)but the positioning of the scarf joint looks a bit worrying.I think that's what a few of the people here are getting at.
I'm not trying to tell you how to build a neck but apart from the fact that it doesn't look very nice when the joint is too far up it's also more likely to be succeptible to breakage when it's right behind the nut there.

I think that's the reason that 99% of guitar manufacturers who use a scarf joint position it further down the neck (behind frets 1 to 3).
Like this:

I'm not being critical, just adding my 2 cents.
A bit of helpful input.

Yeah, that's an Ibanez neck(Jem,i think. Some RG's are the same construction),pic courtesy of this site.

All Ibanez scarf joints are in that position, whether it's the bubinga/maple three-piece like that one or the one-piece maple as used on other Jem and RG models.

Re: Legacy One Guitars OFFICIAL THREAD

I'm aware of the necks you're showing, however we build our guitar necks using the William Cumpiano method. Same method that I started using to build accoustic guitar necks which are much higher tension than electric guitars. I'm not sayting that there is any advantage or disadvantage, but from what I know about wood, the glue is stronger than the wood, and you will break solid wood before you break a glue joint.

Not that this really proves anything, but here's some fun pics. This is martallica's neck (just kidding)

I don't like to brag, but that's 210 pounds of "twisted blue steel" standing on that neck. Well probably more like 210 pounds of "twisted marshmellow fluff", but still that's 210 pounds either way. Not even a sound.

Those neck joints will outlast me. I wish I could do info-mercials. I'd pound nails in with them or jack up a car or something. That joint is as strong as it's ever going to be.

William Cumpiano is known as "the master" of guitar builders. He will happily respond to e-mails via his website. He says neck joint behind the nut. I don't know why, but it's just how I learned.

Thanks.

Re: Legacy One Guitars OFFICIAL THREAD

Unless there's a threat of a neck breaking precisely along the glue line, the positioning of the scarf joint shouldn't necessarily be that significant of an issue. Never seen a picture of one breaking like that, but I've seen plenty of non-scarf Gibson necks snapped by minor falls. If it breaks along the glue line, then it wasn't glued right, simple as that.

Re: Legacy One Guitars OFFICIAL THREAD

That's what I was trying to say. There is no way that the glue joint will break. Ever. The wood would snap way before the glue would, and that neck had all of my weight on it. Solid necks (1 piece) are the weakest and most prone to headstock breaks.

That's why I don't get the Ibanez joint. In effect it is still SOLID wood at the angle of the headstock. That's a weak point. At least that's my take on it, but I really can't say that I am 100% sure either way. I just know I like my necks, and I hope everyone else does too.

Re: Legacy One Guitars OFFICIAL THREAD

What's funny is that I obviously didn't have any idea of what was going to happen. I told my wife, "You'd better take this picture quick, because this could go really bad!". Then once I stood on it, it was like, "Holy Crap! It's holding me."

Anyway, like I said, I don't know that it proves anything except it holds my fat ass!
