You figure Jem owners should know how to spell "Jem" and "Vai", here's another exception...

Yeh, I've never seen one myself. And just imagine calling a guitar a Universe, how stupid is that! hehehehe

I wouldn't say no to owning it though!

700 bucks for just a neck?!?!

I'd rather had it custom built for that money.

Rich, you have a few of those, are you considering letting them go at those prices?.....
Over $400 for a PMC neck seems silly to me, after all you can get an identical custom neck for $400...

Custom will never be original. If you've got a nice PMC that's neck has seen way too much play time.....

Yeah, I suppose people will pay whatever they have to, to get it original. With a custom neck, the resale value would plumit too.

Re: New auctions to laugh at

So the guy paid over $800 for it and he's trying to instantly sell it at a profit?

I suppose if you do have a PMC in need of a new neck it would be worth it.

I agree with what Rich is saying about custom never being original too.
If you've got a PMC with a custom made neck it's never gonna' be worth what an all original PMC would be.

Re: New auctions to laugh at

These are bought by people who want to put together a custom, not by original PMC owners who would rather re-fret than pay $900 for a new neck.
It’ll be cheaper to smash the neck, go to a dealer and pay $600 for a brand spanking new neck from Ibanez as well…………….

This also is a false economy as $900 neck, $500 swirled body from ATD, $300 bits and pieces from a parted RG5xx from evilbay and add about $200 for pickups and a clear pickguard and good several hours putting this together and you end up with a $2000 mutt that will never fetch that unless you lie about it’s origins……..

Um, isn't how the guitar plays and sounds the most important thing? Aren't we supposed to be musicians and not museum curators?

Just my 2 cents.

Yes, but that all depends on personal tastes. Some people don't mind beating the bleeding hell out of their instruments. Some people such as Mr. Vai can afford to swap out necks at leisure, etc... I like to keep my instruments in the best condition humanly possible. My personal preference is that if I'm going to buy something, I like it to be all original. Any mods I do are my preference, as opposed to someone elses. It's important to some, including myself, that although my guitars get used, they still maintain value as what they are. Unless I buy a Jem body by itself, and put a different neck on it, I'd much rather have something original, in excellent shape, as opposed to frankensteining it if at all possible.

That said, at the same time, there's nothing wrong with making some freakish hybrids, you can do some very interesting/innovative things. But again, I'd want to be the one doing it. How the instrument plays/sounds is VERY important indeed. I'm very attached to my Jem for example. Nothing sounds/plays like it (out of the instruments I own/have owned). Swapping necks might give it a slight change in sound that could hurt my ears, or it could sound great. But if there's any way I can preserve what I have, I'm going to do that.

Sentimentality goes a long way in the hearts of many musicians. EVO has been badgered to death, and Vai still plays it.

Like I said, it's all a matter of personal preference. I have to say though, something about a well broken-in maple fingerboard is just sweet.

You can't buy a new PMC neck from Ibanez anymore. And a refretted neck with extremely dirty board is worth, what? to the overall value of a PMC?
