Can someone clairify the bid history as it appears that bidder3 is driving the price up against an invisible bidder - even when viewing the automatic bids.

I'm plainly missing something here

Looks like the bidder was upping their bid to reach the reserve price.

Bingo. An item with a reserve stops auto bidding and forces whatever you bid, to show as a bid instead of keeping at the current bid and raising it when someone else bids against you.
