Port City Music: I have a question about your cabs

I see your our new sponser so congrats for joining us and welcome.

My question to you is this. I am a speaker box builder and was just looking at your enclosures. To me it appears these are just slot loaded ported enclosures.. I was wondering if this is true and if not could you explain to us what the WAVE is all about.. Is it a folded horn? a bandpass? A slot port?

Thanks
Brett

For those not in the know, a slot loaded ported enclosure is simply a ported enclosure but instead of using a round port most commonly seen on home speakers it uses a slot. The benefits of this is reduced turbulance caused by the port itself.

The downsides to this type of enclosure is often by amatuers it can be miscalculated and the port size will either wind up tuned incorrectly and higher resulting in higher spl but a dramatic loss of low end and impact. Another downside is to lower the tuning of the enclosure requires alot more port area than most would ever think. Lower tuning will increase the ports length significantly and this is where common mistakes are made. For us guitarists if tuned incorrectly the freq range in which a enclosure is tuned to can either make or break the cabinet if tuned to high it will elimanate all low end, if tuned to low all you will get is thunderous bass. It is a fine line between good and evil here.

The benefits of a slot loaded ported enclosure is 100 fold over a round port. First you are increasing the ports surface area to reduce over all turbulence this is where the internal volume of air inside the cabinet will begin to push more and more air thru the round port till it begins to make audible noise like a whooshing thru the port(Think Pipe organ). Also with slot loaded ported enclosures depending on tuning can really have tremendous impact sometimes 3-4db louder than a sealed or openback cabinet.

Nevermind I just read thru the site more and can see its a slot port. Looks like a nice cabinet... I am going to make a slot port extension for my Carvin MTS3212 and just happened to see you guys were a new sponser doing the same thing
