Seller won't give serial number...is this bad???

I saw an ad for a used Jem 10 for sale and emailed the shop.

They sent pictures and answered all questions but they won't tell me what number it is or give me a complete serial number unless I buy it. They said for fraud protection protection reasons.

What gives? Has anyone else faced this problem?? Should I be concerned that it might be stolen guitar??

I'd say, "how 'bout MY fraud protection?"

That sounds silly.

How else can you check to make sure you're not inadvertently buying a stolen guitar?

The only logical reasons a dealer would have for not giving a serial # is

1) He believes it's stolen and is protecting himself
2) It's not his but he's brokering it for somebody else. And if you knew what guitar it was you might know the owner and cut the middleman out of the deal.

I've got no problem giving serial #'s on anything I handle, there's just no point in not doing so.
