What do you think of this deal for a marshall amp ?

Sorry if this is on the wrong forum, mods please feel free to move if necessary.

Marshall AVT150
he paid £800 for the lot last year, very light gigging, will throw in
marshall leather covers (cost £40), just had valve replaced and full
service.
see attached pics, retail of just the top cab is £320.

he wants £325 for the lot, but would bid him down to around £275-300. will
pick up, he lives locally.

would this do for just home jamming use (or is it too big) ? I am after one
that will give me a nice gary moore type lead sound, with lots of crunch for
hetfield sound rythym. Would this do that on its own, without the need for
extra effects etc ?

Ive never bought an amp like this before, sorry for stupid questions !!

Thanks in advance.

its a good price for that lot and it would be fine for gigging but...

my experience with valvestate amps (and I still have one) is that you wont get that gary moore / hetfield sound. the distortion /overdrive is pretty thin and I have to run a keeley DS-1 in front to get any kind of decent tone...

if you were going to gig it with a rack in front of it then OK, but for home jamming I would get a modelling amp.

for what its worth, I wouldnt buy another valvestate personally - its served me well for over 10 years (I think) and ive gigged the arse off it.. but I wouldnt get another...
check out line6 stuff.

I hate that about new amps too man, always puts me off 'em in shops. But that's usually just because the speaker hasn't ben 'broken in' with a half-hour's maxed out playing or so. Give it a week at home usually, and max it out a few times.

That said, I really do rate the old VS's, i.e. the ones with no effects. Fantastic tone from the old VS50. However, these new built-in effects thingummies do sound, bluntly, rubbish.

horrible amp, was given one to use for a week while my other head was in the shop, played on it for, oh, about 1 second, laughed, and told the guy it wasn't worth the effort to bring to my car. its a crappy solid state marshall, don't be fooled by the little 12ax7 in its preamp stage.

i use to want this amp (mind you, this was years ago when i had nothing but a peavey rage) if you get a valve state i'd suggest looking at an older series (not the AVT series) but the VS-8xxx. my buddy just scored a valvestate 8100 for $180 (under £100) it was just the head, no speaker cab, but it still gives you a much clearer and tighter tone.

its no JCM by any means, but even by solid state standards they are just weak. VS and first run MG series destroy AVTs
