1st Stomp Box Purchase Ever

I want to make my first stomp box purchase and wondered what you guys recommend. I have a Digitech RP200A processor, but I'm ready to start aquiring boxes. I do tend to prefer a very clean sound a lot , but also love a nasty, dirty grungey sound. I don't have a lot to spend, so what do you guys think is essential for me? I value your opinions.

What do you want? What type of music are you playing? My pedals are TU2, bad horsie, ubermetal, digidelay and Ge7 and it suits my style of playing which is metal

I think for clean tones, you can go for chorus or reverb. Boss CE-5 or RV-5 should be god enuff. Any delay pedal will enhance the tones greatly....

Re: 1st Stomp Box Purchase Ever

Ok i might get hit for this but you could get a few Behringer pedals. About $50USD or something like that. Anyway it could give you a bit of a starting block and there might be some really good ones out there. Apparently they copied all the big names so it should mean that their sound is almost similar.
Or then you can spend a bit more and get something else eg: Boss, Digitech, Ibanez....etc.
To me it sounds like you probably want an overdrive pedal, or a softer distortion type of pedal.

Re: 1st Stomp Box Purchase Ever

I'd get the pedals from e-bay or craigslist, harmony-central, etc, don't be afraid to buy used.
Nose around the local music stores and see who has what pedal brands you like, try those out, get em cheaply on the bay or wherever.

I would think of starting off with basic tone shaping 1st.
Overdrive or distortion, then grab a chorus or delay pedal, then tighten up your clean sound with a good compressor. Once you've dialed that in, grab a good noise gate.

Boss is good, of course. I started on Arion pedals, they were kind of a boss clone in their day, IMO If Boss had it, Arion had one. It sounds like Behringher is the same, at the level you're in, I think it makes sense to grab the stuff you can afford and as you develop your ears and skill level, you can become more snobby with effects and cabling, etc.

Another option, save a little longer and get a single rack unit like a Rocktron Intellifex, Xpressor, or TC Electronics G-major. You get a lot more bang for your buck. The only thing the racks don't provide is overdrive, you'll need either a preamp or an amp with an effects loop.

Lots of options, it all depends on your budget.

I'm not a big fan of modeling pedals like the Line 6 stuff, but it gets the job done, that's what counts. Try everything you can to make your decision.

Rotsa ruck!

Re: 1st Stomp Box Purchase Ever

I do need to be a bit thrifty starting out. My guitar addiction is already costing me some dough lately, and I'm not even buying JEM's. Lately I've been playing a lot of Metallica, Pink Floyd, some small bluesy pieces my teacher throws my way, and some punk rock riffs like Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. I'm just getting started with the electric.

I like to play arpeggios cause I love the overlapping ringing tones. Probably a carryover from my classical playing. I foresee myself in the near future play old-school punk, industrial from the 80's like Sisters of Mercy, and the usual classic rock pieces such as Zepplin and whatnot. I also like Rob Zombie.

If I were you I'd buy 3 stomp boxes tomorrow, either cheaper Behringer ones or, if you can afford it, Boss ones....as follows:

CHORUS

OVERDRIVE

DIGITAL DELAY

Re: 1st Stomp Box Purchase Ever

Your best bet starting out is to get a cheap multi-effects box. Do not focus on the amp modeling but rather on the effects. That way you can get a taste of what a whole LOT of effects sound like. Then start dropping the higher cash on the real pedals that the multi is emulating. I started with a KORG Toneworks AX1500 and then went out and bought all the vintage boxes that corresponded to what I liked in the pedal.

In fact, it looks like there is a Yamaha MagicStomp I listed in the classifieds right now. You can upgrade it easily to version II (only diff between the upgraded one and a real II is that the II has a headphone out jack).

For about the same money, and many more modeled effects, get a behringer XV-AMP. It is packed with effects. Four each of most. 4 phasers, 4 chorus, 4 tremolo, etc.
