I say go Line 6. *Best bang for the buck - non tube under $500 (used.) *Go for the Flextone, although the Spiders are neat toys, the Flextone is a good place to stay for a while. *You could even go wth a Flextone Plus (1x12) and add a cab later for the 2x12 you're looking for.

Check out the Carvin website. They offer 4 - 2x12 combos. Both tube and solid state models. Prices range from $440.00 to $970.00.

I would recommend the Marshall Valvestate series. I think the sound is very good, and the top model at present has 3 or 4 channels, with a whole bunch of digital effects.
I have a POD and can attest to its' versatility as a front end for a PA, and for recording, so I'm sure the Line 6 stuff is good also. Can you get a DI from a Flextone similar to a POD?? If so, and you plan on doing some recording I'd maybe go for the LIne 6, but the Marshall stuff is good to my ears.

Flextone II's are identical to the POD 2.0, and the POD Pro has even more...

Most (all but the smallest one, I think) of the Flextone combo's have seperate XLR jacks for DI input, similiar to the POD Pro.

I don't agree.. I used to have a Valvestate 8100 head with the 4x12 (wish I'd held onto the cabinet..) and I thought the tone was horrendous!

I dislike the Valvestates too. *A friend of mine recently purchased a NOS Orange VS-65 and it sounds terrible.

I agree with you guys about the valvestates.....They do sound awful.
And I also agree with gkelm - Pevey classic 50 is definately a great amp for really short money. Takes a hell of a beating and comes back for more. I wouldn't use one anymore, but definately lots of bang for very little buck. *

Donīt like valvestates at all. A good and cheap (but old) option is a JCM 800 2x12, much better in my oppinion than JCM 900 but only in the low sensitivity jack. If you have a bag full of bucks for me thereīs only one amp : Mesa Boogie ROAD KING  or a Hughes & Kettner.

I would go with a crate GFX212T, it has by far the best sound (both distortion and clean) I have ever heard. *I have tried boogies, marshalls, and line 6 stuff and still nothing comes close. *I know crate kind of has a bad reputation (some of thier older amps sound awful), but seriously check one out I am sure you wont be disappointed. *
