2x12 Cabinet

Hi, I'm interested in getting a reasonably priced and good sounding 2x12 cabinet. What do you guys suggest?

Thanks, regards
Nelson

In the US? Avatarspeakers.com. The Vintage 2-12 is killer.

I was looking into getting a decent but affordable 2x12 as well.

Skins, do you have personal experience with Framus cabs ? The V30 ones are really affordable, but it's hard to find decent comparative info about them, and I always have the feeling, when I'm reading reviews about them, I'm reading stuff written by starters

Re: 2x12 Cabinet

I have a closed back 2x12 with V30s and it's brilliant. Gives my amp so much more definition and a more articulate top compared to anything else I've tried, and with 100 watts pushing it, it gets LOUD (as you'd expect). You can also take off the back and get an open back sound too, which I haven't got round to trying. If you're interested, I've got the FR 212 CS CB.

Re: 2x12 Cabinet

Skins, that's the one with V30's right ? exactly the one I'm looking at. Could you elaborate a bit more plz ?

What amp do you use ?
What's you main genre ?
What other cabs did you compare it to ?

Nsabino, if I'm hijacking your thread here, give me a kick, but I thought this would be relevant for you as well

Re: 2x12 Cabinet

My amp... well... here goes...
Peavey Supreme XL
*prepares for onslaught of abuse*

My main genre is... Ummm... well I play a fair amount of classic rock, for which the pronounced treble and mids are great, same with punk stuff. As far as the technical stuff goes, I can get a pretty good Satch tone, but not so much Vai. Amp's not smooth enough.

Other cabs I've tried include the Peavy 4x12 I bought the head with, with Blue Marvels. Sounds very bassy/muddy to my ear. Same sort of thing in another cab loaded with Celestion G12Hs, although not nearly as much. The V12s have a definite brightness to them, but without being harsh (I have my EQ about 6 for bass, 10 for mids and 8 for treble on pretty much all channels), which probably comes from them being quite upper mids heavy compared to other speakers.

I reallllly want to try a JSX through my cab 'cause when I played it in the shop it sounded dull and my first thoughts were, "this needs some V30s to brighten it up".

Re: 2x12 Cabinet

Hi, thanks for the info guys, but I have to add something I forgot to mention. I'll be using a Roland 80x through this cabinet and I've heard that it's best to get more of a neutral sounding speaker for modelling amps. Is this a fact or would I still benefit from a specially voiced type of speaker like a Celestion Vintage 30?

Thanks, regards
Nelson

I'd say it's totally subjective, see what you like.

Re: 2x12 Cabinet

if you have a modeling amp that has cab sims you'd want to use, you're better of with a FlatRangeFlatReponse cab. Maybe it's a good idea to check out some Roland forum about this as well.

Thanks for the Framus insight Skins

Re: 2x12 Cabinet

I just made my own 2x12. Got the 'frame' off a friend (about an inch thick chipboard or something) for almost nothing (he just got me to donate to charity). Mount ur stuff in it (including your speaker of choice) and your ready to go, not forgetting my newly built 2x12 is the most compact I've seen to date.
It was alot of fun to build, and now it has more sentiment than buying a new one, and saved me ALOT of money !
Regards
Jon

Re: 2x12 Cabinet

Look for an old , used ADA 212 cab! I have one for when I don't feel like lugging my 412 around (which is most of the time). I think I bought mine used for like $160. Speakers are subjective, as I immediately replaced the Celestions in it with Eminence Legends for use with my SLO . But if you are looking for a well made, good sounding cab....can't go wrong with an old ADA split stack.
