3 or 5 piece neck?

Why/what is the idea behind 3 piece maple necks versus 5 piece maple/walnut necks? Is there a tone difference at all, or just construction stability?

I'm thinking of getting an RGA121, and the necks come in 3 or 5 depending on the year

I cannot hear any difference.
The new 5 piece ones seem to be more resistant to quick temperature changes etc. and more stable overall.

I have played many 3 piece necks with no issues tho.
