5150 Combo
I've heard these getting a bad rep, like they don't sound as good as the head type stuff. Is there any truth to that. I've only played the head, but I like combos better.

Re: 5150 Combo
They are great amps - I had a 2-12
combo
. The only downside was it was really heavy.
It's not going to get clean like a Fender Twin, but they have excellent agressive tones.

Re: 5150 Combo
Ive played both the combo and the head, the 6L6`s really rock and give you that EVH brown tone. Both amps rawk in my opinion.
Obviously the head and cab has a more CRISP tone.
Very expensive though and like gold dust in the UK.

Re: 5150 Combo
Love mine. Found it a little darker sounding than the head (not necessarily a bad thing). Clean was more clean on the combo than the head.

Re: 5150 Combo
I have a
5150
combo and it rips. I had a friend who had an original 5150 head and the combo sounded better than that. Hands down. More thump from the low end and sizzle in the high.
Dunno about 5150 II or 6505s though.

Re: 5150 Combo
I figured there would be a slight difference. But overall I think the only really important difference is that the combo is heavy, which is true of a lot of 2x12s.

Re: 5150 Combo
Oh yeah it's bordering on 90 pounds I think. With no side handles and no casters it's a bitch to move around.

Re: 5150 Combo
The way the combos are built it looks like there is more wood and shaping than required. I guess its because they have the eq on the top instead of the front.
