6l6 or el34 amp for RG
Just curious, which type of amp tube (amp that is based around that particular tube ex:
dual rectifier
- 6l6) works best for an RG/JEM, and does this differ on humbucker positions and split coil positions?

Re: 6l6 or el34 amp for RG
If you like the classic Marshall-shred sound of the 80s (Gilbert, Lynch, Satriani, EVH, Reb Beach,
Doug Aldrich
, Greg Howe,
Vinnie Moore
, etc), then go EL34s. 6L6s are used in Fender type amps and a lot of Mesa Boogies.
I'm partial to EL34s myself.

I'm just saying which brings the most out of an RG/Jem guitar, regardless of style?

Re: 6l6 or el34 amp for RG
There are no answers to questions like this. The best amp is the one you like.
There is no such thing as the "right" pick up, amp, guitar, strings, cables, tubes, trems, picks, speakers, cabinets, pedals, etc etc etc.

exactly, i think a lot of people on this board are kinda sick of hearing the same question over and over. "which amp should i get?" "which pedal?"
it all depends on YOU! try them out, see which u like better. as crazy as it might sound, i prefer my gio's playability over many other ibanezes. why? cuz it's me. i KNOW that pretty m uch no one EVER will recommend me to buy a gio when i have money to buy a jem. but maybe i would. that's me. no cid. not andy. it's yoyo

Re: 6l6 or el34 amp for RG
Yea I know this. I was just wondering because I believe that the amp should accenuate the frequencies the guitar and its pickups produce. For example, many people agree that el34 amps and the el34 in general highlight the mids of a
humbucker guitar
whereas a strat sounds better through a fender amp with 6l6s that have a more scooped EQ like a strat pickup does. And since the RG can be a humbucker and single coil guitar which would accenuate it more in general. But yes it is an open ended question. And not that I am buying an amp at the moment, I feel my XXX with 6l6s isn't getting the most out of my RG and its not so much the brand pickups in it but just generally speaking.

yoyo, for once we agree about something.
It would be awesome if in general people would take 5 minutes to search these same topics that are beat into the ground about what ____ is the best. It all comes down to opinion.
You can play 10 different 6L6 amps and 10 different EL34 amps and they will all sound different. The type of tube is a small part of what contributes to the overall sound
A Recto sounds nothing like a Twin, and a Plexi sounds nothing like a JCM2000

You're right man. As useless as this thread may be sometimes you need something like this to make you realize you're getting off track of the goal we as
guitar players
have. Excuse my useless topics long hours at work does that sometimes...

Re: 6l6 or el34 amp for RG
I prefer 6L6's, as they seem to have a tighter bottom, and seem to have a little more treble. EL34's sound better with cleans to me, though.

Re: 6l6 or el34 amp for RG
I've had 6L6s, EL34s, and KT77s in my amp.
Buy an amp for it's tone and voicing, not for what tubes are in it.

Re: 6l6 or el34 amp for RG
most all the tone you hear comes from the hands. satch, vai, timmons will all sound like satch, vai and timmons no matter what amp or guitar they play. if you suck, you'll still suck with a $3000 amp. it you shred, you'll shred on a crate. that said. different amp will help bring out your personal hand tone. which is why idiots say some amps suck. it's not the amp. I like the jsx over the legacy. but guys hear hate the jsx and love marshalls. its what you personal feel for phrasing, pick attack, touch, legato style etc work with a paticular amp. do not ever buy an amp on recommendation. but demo everything and buy what makes you play better.

I have to agree with Darin...... what brings out the most in an RG/JEM or an amp is the player!
Amp recommendations are pretty worthless, it's your ears you need to trust! Not the recommendation some player you've never heard!
Hear someones playing or tone you're impressed with? Find out what they're using and go try one for yourself. But remember if your chops aren't up to a proficient level or that of your favorite player, don't expect an amp to get you there either. You'll just be wasting money and sounding like a sub-par player plugged into high end gear. EL-34's or 6L6's won't matter a damn bit.
The
local music store
will surely "love" ya though!

Re: 6l6 or el34 amp for RG
My only hard fast rule that I have personally is that I like high wattage clean
solid state amps
for hollowbodied jazz guitars (like a 175 or Ibanez FA-100) and
tube amps
for solidbodies. The type of tube and the type of SS amps is just personal preference.
