Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

For a 7 string I wouldn't even think about anything less than a 2x12, a single speaker just doesn't have that "oomph" that you need for that B string.

It was Death Metal and I was the Lead Guitarist so I needed volume over the other guitarist, loud vocals and drums/bass, I'll put it this way, when I had my legacy I ran it on 8.0 to 8.5 at 100 watt setting thru the 2x12, and it was about enough.

Ok..i was thinking the same way..
I guess it would be better with 1x15..in kb100? what do You think..? i guess its still weak..
Theres also an option for a peavey tnt 150, a 150w 1x15 bass amp..but its more expensive..what do you people think about that..?

With Peavey you really need to try them out, trust me we have peavey guitar amps, keyboard amps, speakers and a PA. You have to try it and pick which sounds best to your ear. By going on what others say i think your gonna end up buying the wrong amp because Peavey dont make the best guitar amps.

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

When my friend and I were shopping around for a amp for his K-7 he settled for a Line6 Flextone II 2x12 combo, it had all the bottom end he needed and sounded great, plus it was hella loud, and he got it for only $250 cause it was beat. We tried out all the other combos, including the much newer and expensive Flextone III's and other 1x12 and 1x15 combos and they were very thin sounding and had no definition.

For a guitar, you need a guitar amp, I would personally stay away from keyboard and PA equipment, everytime I've played on them with a guitar they sounded like crap, no tone and dry as hell.

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

I have played on a tnt at my home for about a year..since my bassist owns it..but i havent used at high volumes..but it is surely loud enough..
and options for shaping tone are good, since it has a eq with 9 sliders..
i can get one like that, but its a bit out of my price range..
and considering peavey kb100..if i try it alone, i still cannot be sure if i will withstand live performance..and i cannot try it with my band, since the seller is from other town..

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

Its a good price i guess..and surely great amp..i would very glad to have chance to buy a line 6 amp for that amount of money in here, but its much much more expensive here in Serbia..and for sure out of my range..
guess i should leave the idea of taking those Roland and Peavey kb100..cause i think they will be too weak for my purpose..
Guess i have to find some 100w 2x12 combo..wihich i also think that would suit me perfectly..
onw stupid question..when 2x12 combo is 100w..does it mean that it is twice 50w..?
cause for roland jc120 it says that it is 2x60w..?

i once played through jc120..on a gig..i barely cranked to 9-10 o' clock (which is a quarter to third of its max capacity i guess), and it was loud enough..!

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

2x12 just means 2 twelve inch speakers pumping at 100 watts max power.

a 2x60 watt means 2 different 60 watt amps inside one unit, one for a left channel and one for a right channel (2 different speakers or cabs)

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

Thanx..
Can you help me then..at what, aproximate, volume (wattage) was i while using that Roland JC120 then..? if i was at the 4/10 on the volume knob..?
is it a 4/10 of a 60w, or a 4/10 of a 120w?

I am asking this in order to know at least aproximatly, what strenght is enough for me..?

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

Wattage and volume are completely different. A 20 watt all tube power amp can be just as loud if not louder than a 100 watt solid state amp. So you really can't go by that.

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

OK..i have heard that..but, since a Roland JC120 is a solid state..and i am surely going to buy a solid state amp, so it will give me at least some starting point..
So, can you give your opinion about the aproximate power of the JC120 i was using..?
Or anyone..?
Thanx..

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

in a live band setting you really shouldn't look for anything less than 80 watts solid state. It should give you enough headroom over vocals, bass and drums for your style. If there was another guitarist I would say more is better.

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

It depends on the amp though, my dads 50W Peavey is a hell of a lot louder than my Marshall 50W. The peavey has 2x12 speakers, the marshall only 1. But the Marshall sounds smoother on the overdrive channel.

Re: 80 watt 1x12 combo..loud enough?

Its also a good idea to have something a bit more powerful that you need, so you can run it at, say half volume and be happy with it, than to have a amp you have to crank all the time and overheating it and blowing it.
