AMD processors with the standard VIA chipsets vrs INTEL - pr
This is just to save the next poor soul the agony of DAYS and MANY hours of troubled time trying to make your new soundcard work with your AMD and VIA chipset. If you got yours to work then consider yourself one of the VERY lucky few. Read the following article and see the MOUNTAINS of problems almost everyone is having with their AMD systems. Sometimes the little extra $$ means ALLOT more in the end!!
Click
H E R E
to read a report from PC Buyers Guide on AMD processors and the chipsets they use vrs INTEL motherboards and chipsets. The processor might not be bad but the combination is cheaper than an INTEL for a reason apparently. I can attest to the chipsets being crap when trying to use them with any top end soundcard (Layla, EWS88D, Lexicon Core II......)
I have heard though that there is a chipset out there (or chipset motherboard combination) that is supposed to be compatible with everything. Anyone know then name of this magic combination? I remember reading about it a couple places on the net but I cant find it now in the discussion groups I remembered seeing it in.

The Echo cards state in their setup instructions that AMD chipsets do not play well with the Echo interfaces. I cannot attest to that issue as I have remained an Intel supporter, I guess mainly for compatability issues. Why waste time and energy when for maybe what $50-100.00 more you have fewer issues?

I'm sorry to say that even though I have documented proof that the Athlon XP2000 wastes the P4 2.2Ghz, my next computer purchase, when I go computer based recording, will be with an Intel machine.
It's just the way it is for the most part. Sure, they're may be exceptions, but the exceptions are too few to buy the AMD over the Intel.

I just got this Dell Dimension 8200 1.8 Ghz with 512 megs of RAM (gonna upgrade to a gig for the hell of it!!) lol and its Intel all around. This thing rocks and has no problems with anything I have installed. I love it!!! I would like to take my AMD6 with Via chipset out to a shooting range and see if I can break it into as many pieces as I have hours into the damn thing!! *lol :shoot: AMD
I know there are other faster systems out there that could smoke mine but for using Acid Pro 3.0,
Sound Forge
5.0, Cakewalk 9 studio, and Adobe Photoshop 6.0 this thing rocks for me. I think it is the first computer I have ever owned that has not given me problems with installing hardware/software. Plus you gotta like that DELL service. For 3 years I can get someone to come to my home to fix the PC if something goes wrong (thats DELL related of course) and get unlimited phone support that does not take 3 hours to get through to someone!! *lol
If I had not already bought the software for PC I MIGHT have considered a MAC

Not a chance in hell would I spend all that money on a Mac, when I can build a premium Intel-based workstation for hundreds less, and have access to more software, often free.
Plus, while I like OS9.2, I hate OS-X. It's garbage, IMO.

Ouch!
I feel your pain I s'pose. I am in a bit of lap of luxury owning both systems, and having both of them to compare..the mac simply blows the pc outta the water...that's just my solid opinion on working with both systems consistently for many years.
OSX is a coming of age for the new o.s. for mac's....it's definitely more stable and the scripting for Cocoa right now (or CarbonLib 2.0) is far superior than the MicroSnot outdated Kernel that XP is based on. *
it's how you use it though, really that's what it comes down to....i'd never want to create a network information system based on mac...that's windows all the way...but i'd never build a digital audio workstation out of a PC...that's mac all the way!!!
I've been fortunate to work with the dual 1Ghz Macs recently and have been working with a very nice Dell P4/800Mhz that w a 600+MB of RAM...no comparison. *but it is based on only my opinion of Logic Audio performance on both systems. Ideally i stick to Digital Performer for Mac.
It's all good. *Just get comfy using one or the other...the finished product is what counts. *

oh...as far as software...
when you have triple the amount of software for the PC vs. mac it doesn't say much.
mac's software developers strive for excellence in design and use for system stability...peecee...well....let's just say that the 3-1 ratio goes down siginificantly when 75% of the software ...blows.
that is just my opinion though...
oh have some fun away from the compooters and lets just jam...
Rikk Beatty
has made some GORGEOUS music on his PeeCee!!

Thanks for the compliment!! Yup with the help of my peecee, lots of software, synths, (and of course 13 years of guitar playin') I got my first record deal!
My contract puts the album due date as October 2002. It is a techno sort of background with guitar over top of it (sorta "Engines of Creation" but in idea only) No major label deal or anything but someone aside from myself will be paying for the duplication, distribution, and advertising costs!! YEAH!! *Hey everybody has to start somewhere right?!?!?

I guess it's just as much personal opinion with computers as it is with guitars. I don't fault Mac owners, and I'm not saying they're total crap either, I'm just saying for me I don't see the value in it.
