amp distortion

Ive seen on the forums a bit about distorsion, something regarding overdriving the pre amp and power output.

To get a better distortion its better to run harder the power output right?

How does this work? I have a peavey JSX, so would running the power output harder meaning having the master volume up higher than the channel volume, or vice versa?

Re: amp distortion

Yeah what you want to do for best results is turn your MV (master volume) up as loud as your ears and neighbors can take and then set your preamp gain accordingly. Often this involves backing off on preamp gain from what you normally use...

Re: amp distortion

I don't know about the jsx, but on my engl savage se, to get the most power amp distortion, I have to have both the master and channel volumes up full

Red's right about the preamp gain probably needing to go down...

Don't take this as written on paper. But usually if you play with the gain on say 8 with the MV down, if you turn the MV up you probably can back off a bit on the gain, maybe to 6 or so. With the added compression the tone compresses and sounds meaner.

I actually meant that my numbers may not be exact, I couldn't care less about going deaf... with guitarists, going deaf is the first sign of becoming a man!
