Amp oportunity

I am looking for a valve amp, something suited for metal, but I also need good cleans (Engl, Soldano, Peavey, tell me others if you know them), but used as I cant afford new equipment. My budget is 1200 max, as it is 15000pesos (mexican). Today I was offered a Laney vc30 combo plus a laney cab 2x12 for 780-800 dollars (10000-11000pesos) and my teacher who is helping to find an amp told me it could be a good deal.
Should I wait till I find something more suited for metal or this would handle all I need?
(My original idea was a Fireball, 3120, Thunder or Jsx, maybe a Bugera)
I like Petrucci, Opeth, Symphony X and similar tones, but love cleans (really cleans, not the ones that start to crunch, but Peavey just sounded to bright and lifeless to me)
I use a GT8 and need an fx loop, I want 2 channel at least and I prefer 2 channel eqs, but some eq could be made with GT8
Question: Get it or wait for a better amp suited to my need, although I know that I wont get an Engl for or even same price?

Re: Amp oportunity

With $1200 there's plenty of killer amps that you can buy used. I'm not really sure what kind of amps you find regularly on the used market down there, though. If you dig the Petrucci-like tone, Mesa Nomads are great amps, if you can find one. I see them go for 7-$800 pretty regularly. Soldano's are wonderful, but possibly out of your budget. If you can find a Hot Rod 50+, that would be worth checking out. I've never played that particular Laney, but they make some great amps. Try it out. If you've played all the peaveys and didn't like them, mark them off your list. There's no need to worry about an amp you don't like anyway. I like the JSX personally.

My answer to your last question: I would say that if your heart is set on an ENGL, then save up some extra cash and get one. Most of the time you're better off paying extra for something great, than spending less for something to suffice. Sure, you'll have an amp NOW and something you can sell later, but you'll end up paying more in the end.

I agree that you should wait for the right amp = that means you really need to hear it first.
You will be inspired and ultimately play more and become a better player.

Don't buy an amp just because it's a good deal - the honeymoon never lasts long.

Re: Amp oportunity

Thanks guys, I will look for a Mesa or an Engl then, I tried the Valveking, so thet may be the reason. I tried a B52, it sounded good, but I do not want those reliability problems, so out of the list. Marshalls sound good to some people not to me, and there was a great deal o Tuesday. JCM600 full stack 7000 pesos (divide by 13 and you get the price in dollars) so bad I dont like them and it is what I most find used.
