Without knowing your exact model of amp, and even then being a Boogie guy rather than a Marshall guy, I can't recommend specific settings for you, but the way I go about finding a tone from a new/unfamiliar amp has 2 ways.
The first is the EVH method. Pretty much the definitive rock sound of the lasat 25 years has been bsaed on Eddie's "Brown Sound" a while back Peavey printed his 5150 settings on the back of that amp's promotional stuff.
He sets his treble to 5, his bass to 7 and his mids to 2. So start by doing that. Set the master volume to suit the occasion, either bedroom practice, or band practice, or gig etc. Then balance out the gain, and master volume to get a decent overall sound. Presence also depends on the room and volume, I tend to use more presence practicing at home in a carpeted room than on stage in a tiled floor bar. Then tweak the tone controls around till you get "your" sound. You'll already be at about the right volume for the occasion.
The other way I look at it works for both clean and dirty sounds. first dial in the gain and volume with the tones set at halfway. Then start tweaking from the midpoint till you arrive at your sound.
Hope that's of some help.
