Amps with the best clean tone

I'd like to get some opinions on what guitar amp has the best clean tone. So far I'm thinking Carvin X100B (and the combo models), Fender Twin Reverb, and Roland Jazz Chorus JC-120. Any others out there I should try? Thanks!

Re: Amps with the best clean tone

I have a JC-120 and its tone is ultra-pure clean. There is NO BREAKUP on it whatsoever - it is also rediculously loud, with tons of overhead. The downside to the JC-120 is that for a tube purist is that you do lose the texture of the tube sound. The Fender sound, and the Vox sound is what most people that aren't metal or rock oriented turn to for their clean tones. I have a Fender Blues Jr and a Blues Deville in our studio and between the Roland and those two Fenders (and my Mesa, which is much deeper more musical than the Fender's), I have pretty much the cleanest clean tonal palette I could ask for...plus Fender's reverb is awesome, and the JC-120's stereo chorus is amazing!

Re: Amps with the best clean tone

Thanks. I never considered that the JC-120 wasn't a tube amp, and the effect that would have on the sound. (I still need to try all these amps out, obviously.)

Slightly off topic: the Carvin X amp combos come in two forms, the XV-112 (100 watts) and the XT-112 (50 watts). Is the difference between the two related to volume level? Or are there tone differences too?

Re: Amps with the best clean tone

Don't get me wrong, the JC-120 has AMAZING clean tones - that is what it is precisely designed for; the best jazz cleans on earth, and it does preserve your pick attack and articulation, and dynamics in the same respects a tube amp would too; with rediculous warmth; but it isn't a tube amp.

On the subject of the Carvin amps. I've only briefly owned a Legacy, and it wasn't really my cats meow (just not my tone...i'm a Mesa high gainer), but yes, obviously a 100 watt amp is going to be louder on the power end, but tone wise, a 50 watt is going to drive the power section a little harder and give you a little more natural distortion from the power section (a very desirable trait in many situations, especially studio), but obviously the 100 watt will have ultra-headroom. That's the tradeoff. Carvin's have beautiful clean tones. Very sparkly, transparent, and incredibly responsive. What you'd expect from a top of the line amp.

Most Riveras, or Rivera era Fenders! Cleans on my knucklehead are superb and they are really flexible with the notch and bright switching.

So, with the 50watt Carvin, you will get power tube distortion at lower volumes than you would with the 100watt? Good to know.

Not MUCH lower volumes.

I just played a Fender Princeton RI and I can't buy one soon enough. Unbelievable clean tone. It sounded so fat I was going to get drunk and bang it.

I'd also like to get another Fender Deluxe Reverb RI

Right, the saturation is just different slightly different (your ears would pick it up more if you had the two amps right next to each other with the same settings...and really you are only going to get power tube distortion at higher volumes, not low volumes. Carvin's are clearer voiced amps on both the pre and power sections (I guess thats why everyone mates them up with Ibanez's so much!)

Right now I find the mesa electra dyne has the best clean I have heard. I actually sold my Rivera for it and I typically don't like mesas.

I've played a Fender Frontman 212r (solid state) and I've been amazed with its clean tone!
It's pretty loud, and really beautiful clean. And the amp is relatively cheap.

Carvin Legacy is the best I've ever had, don't know how the X100B compares though.

Re: Amps with the best clean tone

I was quite shocked at how good the clean channel on the Mesa Express is. Not too bad on the wallet either

Matchless Chieftain... very sweet, reacts well with pedals and you can get a mean blues/country grit if you push it
