Anyone got a Peavey 6505+, 6505, or Triple XXX head?

If ya do, can you give me a little review on them?

Im really intersted in buying one of them heads, to go with a Mesa Boogie Slanted Cab.

I want good response to harmonics, heavy-ass riffing (think metallica or machinehead), nice jazz fusion tone (think allan holdsworth) and a nice Steve Vai shred kinda tone.

Please tell me if im askin for too much, or if one of these amps are exactly what i need.

Thanks in advance.

I have a XXX. It's an great metal amp and the crunch channel is truely awesome (for metal). The ultra channel has more gain than you'll ever need! Clean channel is okay.
I also have a JSX head and that is excellent for everything from a great clean channel up to a good metal tone. It's not as extreme as the XXX, but has a lovely tone to it and responds very well to harmonics. Out of the two amps, I'd say the JSX is much more versatile, although I prefer the XXX Crunch channel for when I'm playing metal.

Oh thanks Gurj for that info. Yeah i tried out the XXX in the music shop and thought "why is the crunch more metal than the Ultra channel?". Lol.

Thanks again.

If you do get one, don't buy the XXX cab. I've got one and it's okay, but since I started using the head with a 2 x 12 Cornford cab, the amp sounds much tighter and a lot brighter.
I did have a 5150 combo a few years back and that was another excellent metal amp. Not great clean channel though, well imo anyway

A XXX or a 5150 doing a Fender clean. If you want a nice clean channel, I'd seriously recommend a JSX. Also, don't discount a Mesa The rectifiers not only great for metal, but the cleans are very nice as well.

Re: Anyone got a Peavey 6505+, 6505, or Triple XXX head?

Yeah but theyre too pricey. I can get a brand new 6505+ for 465 pounds from Japan (im moving to Cambodia soon, so i dont have to pay no import tax or ought, and its close to Japan anyway lol), JSX head for 600, XXX for 465 too.

But Mesas are like 1300 (in Japan, again) so thats not an option.

Fair point. Out of those amps you stated, I'd say the JSX was the best all-rounder.
Also, I've read a few reviews about the Ultra channel on the JSX being not that great. I disagree, I actually like it. It's similar to the Crunch channel on the XXX.

Thought you decided on a VHT?

Infact isn't this like the 4th thread you have started asking about what amp to get?

Re: Anyone got a Peavey 6505+, 6505, or Triple XXX head?

FYI Gudster, no it aint. Its my first i think, the other ones where just me trying to find the most harmonic, or the highest gain amp.

And I have decided on a VHT. This is another amp head im wanting to get. As i said before, i can get these cheap from people i know in Japan. So for the price of one head in England, i can get two or three from Japan.

No problem mate
If it's within your budget, the other brand you might want to try is an Engl. Possibly a Powerball or Savage. But I played through a Screamer combo using a Z5 footswitch and I was very surprised how nice it sounded. I was even tempted to get one myself!

Re: Anyone got a Peavey 6505+, 6505, or Triple XXX head?

I've been looking at a used XXX and it seems really good (haven't heard it yet, but most reviews seemed positive). I'd like versatility but I don't have the money to buy a new JSX (can't find any used). Is the XXX clean really bad? I'd like a really clean clean. From what I understand it doesn't have reverb, so maybe that's the problem. And I also heard that it's not as good without the effects loop being on for some reason.
