Anyone here ever ship an amplifier??

I'm selling one, it's an Ampeg, weighs 60 lbs. I'm stumped on how to ship it while maintaning it's integrity. Just a big box and a lot of packing?

No but I received one. It was shipped in a kinda large box which was then inside a huge ass box with a ton of wrapping paper and guitar case boxes providing supportr.

Re: Anyone here ever ship an amplifier??

I shipped a XXX combo a few months ago. That thing weighed about 85 lbs.....jeez I don't miss luggin that thing around.
Anyway, I shipped it using DHL which I found to be a little cheaper than UPS for the weight and size of the thing. Unfortunately I had a Hell of a time trying to find a box big enough to fit the amp. I did end up buying a box from UPS that cost me $13.00. I then went to Home Depot and bought 1/2 inch styro-foam insulating for about $5. I basically packed the foam around the amp inside the box. The guy I sold it too received the amp just fine.
Hope that helps a little.

Re: Anyone here ever ship an amplifier??

Just please please 'seal up' the amp itself in a plastic bag of some sort (big trash bags work nicely) so you aren't picking / compressed-air-blowing styrofoam bits out of the speaker cone and tube sockets for an hour! Styrofoam peanuts can be a real pain in this regard, but so can solid block styrofoam as little bits of it come off all over the place as well.

Also- keep the preamp tubes in, but pull the power amp tubes, box 'em separately so they aren't smashing against eachother, then wrap them in bubble wrap. And if you can, DON'T put the power cord in the cavity in back of the amp. It can smack the preamp tubes and any exposed speakers in the back.
