I was lucky enough to find some amazing epi's right off the rack at GC(now my favorite guitars lol!) But I've played some pretty dodgy ones too. It might have been more due to the setup of said dodge ones, but there's really no way to tell in hindsight.
I'd say go for it.

+1, I own 2 epis, a g400 and a lp studio, both are awesome, the sg was pure luck since my father bought it for me, the lp i recently bought it, its a 2005 one that a friend of mine was selling, I have played several epiphone guitars and some have been great and some have been very dissapointing, though both of them that I have are great and have way better fretwork than the equivalent gibsons that I have played/owned.
